Following on from comments arising out of the Boozy Britain thread, I now pose this question, what does it mean to be British? What are the defining characteristics or qualities that make one British rather than any other nationality?

No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.
Ah, well I'm English, not British. I know most Scots, Irish and Welsh people would say the same as well. Don't lump us in with the other lot, we hate each other.
Anyway, being English means - watching football, moaning about the weather, eating curry, binge drinking, not liking the French, drinking tea morning noon and night, looking forward to Bonfire Night, and being the least racist and most welcoming people in Europe, despite what the snide Lefty Guardianistas would have you believe - but we still don't like the French.
Nothing really, the most defining being type of humor and that's about it. I was going to say somthing along the lines of 'well grounded' but I couldn't think of an accurate way of putting it.

we belive that beer should be drunk, and the french should be shot
( we being englishmen, not them transvestite scots, or the wooly welsh)

4 groups of fiercly independant people with a history and sense of humour unmatched by any other nation in the world. With borders etched by nature millions of years ago.
Me? I'm English. Don't include me with the minor tribes. Disliking the French is a national institution that has been in existence for over a millenium. Sadly we seem to have lumped ourselves with a leader who is determined to wipe out our independance and mold us into the grey morass of the rest of Europe. We as a nation have stood up against everything that has been thrown at us down the ages, sometimes alone. Including the greatest tyranny in history.
Pity we seem to have lost sight of that.
Oh yeah, and it never took us 2 years to pitch up and help someone out.

Who are we? We are the people who stood alone against the Nazi menace, never to surrender (unlike the French). We are a welcoming and largely non-racist people (unlike the French) and most importantly of all we do not smoke those stupid small cigars all day (unlike the French).
Oh, and we are the people who don't like the French.
Its their own fault....they bring it on themselves....stupid french men

I remember readng Jeremy Paxman's book on 'what it is to be british' a couple of years ago. A slightly tedious read, but the british culture is such an amalgum of diverse influences borne of millenia of minor & major invasions, couple wih ancient tribal traditions. All in all tho, I really dont know the defining criteria of being English or British, I just know I'm proud to be it.
The above is rathr dated view. It means nothing to be British or English, people are just proud to be it for whatever indeterminate reason.

Nope. I'm English, my Dad is English, then from there back, my family is Scottish, back to the time of the formation of the clans and the like, and then... well, who knows. I know members of my family have played for Wolverhampton Wonderers and Celtic, invented the hamock and formed the SS though.Originally Posted by 0iD
Ah, good old Uncle Himmler. Do you know how difficult it was to find a 'Congratuations On Your Promotion Reichsfuhrer-SS' card in those days? Hall Marks range was not as varied as it is now.
There are millions of people who have given their lives, many at a young age, to give you the freedom to say that, mate. Think on...Originally Posted by yamangman

Which is why many of us are somewhat enraged at the decision of the govt to cede our borders to the very nations who actually tried to take them by force. At least one of them in living memory.Originally Posted by Vaul
Without our history we aren't very much. With our history we are a great deal. Given our size and population we, as a nation, have probably achieved to date more than any other nation since the Romans. We created and ran an empire that spanned the globe and continue to maintain good relations with most of the post empire countries. Despite what post collonial guilt trippers would have us believe. We gave our language and laws to a multitude of other nations who still use them as a basis for their own societies today. Look at Magna Carta, compare it to the US constitution. Not a lot of difference except Magna Carta was written in 1215 by the English. We went to war with the strongest military power in Europe in 1914 because we had guaranteed the borders of a smaller country, Belgium. Despite the German request that we ignore that 'scrap of paper'. That one act really defines what it is to be British, and it's something we continue to do today.
Young people are still dying for this country, whether here or in foriegn places. Ultimately it's defending this country and it's people (grateful and ungrateful alike) by denying others who wish us harm the ability to do us harm.
