    Lessons....?

    World marks Auschwitz liberation

Okay, so we've just had the 60th memorial of Auschwitz. In Question Time it was asked what do we do with the memory of such an event. I think most of us aware of the event can say it is significant in history and worth remembering, but the question I want to ask is if it's worth it, and if it's significant, what have you learned, or what can one learn, from Auschwitz?

One lesson at a time please.

in 10yrs time there wont be many survivors at all...
and yes, as a world we need to recognise this aweful event to ensure it never happens again. and it falls on the responsibility of all countries to enforce it...

indeed. and yet do we ever learn? clearly not.
even so called peace-keeping missions turn into a sordid mess of depravity, just look at what the US soldiers have ben doing to the iraqis they 'capture'...sickening.
it happens all the time, mugabi does it and we don't lift a finger - why?
itsa sorry state of affairs that we live in a world that, quite honestly, doesn't care enough...

Hmmm, not hearing many lessons hear, just comments about learning or needing to learn. Thus far I've noted one actual lesson -

Is that all we can learn from Auschwitz and its the liberation of the Jews from that place of slaughter?

Social Identity Theory (developed by Henri Tajfel, a European Jew) tells us we form a social identity for ourselves, based on characteristics of the social groups or category to which we belong. But a social category is only a category when compared to other categories, and so knowing who we are is in part defined by knowing who we are not.

The simple act of categorizing people into groups is suficient to generate prejuice between groups, and so it is the drive towards forfilling this social identity that drives people to discrimination.

In Nazi Germany, the problem was largely the result of the severe reparations forced on Germany as punishment for WW1. The loss of the war, and the extreme poverty, led to an undermining of the German Identity. This insecurity led to people naturally trying to assert thier identity more strongly. This environment was exactly what the Nazi party was built on, a way for the weak to assert their social identity, and this level of discrimination against other groups, to the extent of attempting to exterminate them, is the result.

Please tell me you are not comparing the abuse of a few Iraqi prisoners by some out of control American soldiers with the attempted mass slughter of an entire race, down to the last man, woman and child.

The only reason to do so would be an out of control anti-American bias, which I ask you to control or at least put into some sort of perspective.
