    Sleep....

For those of you (I assume, a vanishingly small contingent) who are not constrained by either family or career, and consider yourself 'adult':

What time do you go to sleep and wake up, in order to feel physically and mentally happiest, and get stuff done?

After ten years of being a professional gambler, with generally awful sleeping patterns, and wanting to adult and be productive, I've been settling recently on 11.30-12 in bed with a book, usually asleep by 12.30, first alarm by about 7.30 and then out of bed by 8. Then walk the dog.

    Re: Sleep....

I generally try to sleep at 11pm and have my alarm at 7am (no snoozing!). Don't normally go for a nap as I find they actually make me more groggy.

However, I realistically tend to only get 6-7 hours sleep as I normally end up getting in bed between 11pm-midnight and wake up at around 6:30am automatically. 7-8 hours sleep is when I feel best though but I'm a firm believer of regular sleeping patterns being the most healthy.

    Re: Sleep....

I have to sleep for ten hours. It always amazes me how people can sleep for eight or even six and not feel constantly tired.

Timing don't seem to bother me though. I can as happily sleep from 9pm to 7am as 2am to noon.

    Re: Sleep....

Just out of uni for the second time and the impact of concurrent exams and project submission had pushed my bed-time to about 7am, often getting up just in time for sunset - all my exams were in the afternoon or evenings. I'd spend all day indoor in front of a computer anyway so I didn't really miss the sun, and it was really cold outside, day or night. Also got my MSc with distinction, so take that, circadian rhythm.

I start 9-5 work again in a matter of days and for the last week I've been pushing myself to go to bed earlier. I'm currently going to bed at 4am and waking up at 10:30am, which is close enough to my usual 1am sleep and 7:30am wake-up for next week.

    Re: Sleep....

I've worked so many night shifts that I still struggle to set a regular time to sleep. I'm already feeling old, so I don't want to start taking afternoon naps. One thing I have found, if I need to get to bed at a decent time is to take melatonin. It's an OTC hormone that I've found to work, although I recognize it may just be confirmation bias.

    Re: Sleep....

Number of hours seem to really, really depend on what I have been up to, but I do prefer a bit more than 8.

Timing, matters more than I really want to admit. I notice that I am more fresh in the morning if I sleep before midnight (incidentally, I seldom sleep at 00:XX, it's always at least +/- 1 hour for some reason). In fact, on an average day (assuming no major physical activities), I think that I might be the most fresh in the morning if I sleep around 7 hours before midnight. The problem is that, is that while I wake up fresh, I will run out of gas, very suddenly, about 15-16 hours into the day. Which means that I will gradually need to sleep 1-2 hours earlier each day, which is not sustainable. That's why I like to make it >8 hours (it means that there is 16 hours or less of time awake in the day, so not only do I get a bit more sleep, but the day is a bit shorter). The alternative would be to fit a powernap somewhere, but there is always the risk of going over and wrecking the pattern.

Speaking of pattern though, in practice, I often sleep after midnight. One problem is that if I pass midnight, the night owl side of me takes over, and I will feel pretty awake until 2-3AM if not even later (again, excluding days where I engage in intense exercise).

    Re: Sleep....

Used to be happy with 9-10 hours when I was by myself. I do like sleep a lot. Bed at 10-10:30, up between 7 and 8. Didn't need a lie in on weekends to recover so would be up and about early to enjoy a non-working day to the most.

    Re: Sleep....

in an ideal world I'm asleep for about 10, alarm goes off at 5.30 for work and I'm usually straight out of bed. Outside of work (this week I'm on leave, for example) I'm probably the only person I know who tends to lean more toward early nights though.

    Re: Sleep....

I used to be up well past midnight on a regular basis. When I forced myself to start going to bed before midnight my life got so much better, so much easier to handle things, no longer feeling crap all the time.

I go through bouts of doing better at it. Ideally, in bed by 10:30, head down for 11 and up at 7:15 for work, or 8:30-9 on the weekend.

All out the window currently due to a new arrival. Sleep whenever it's possible.

    Re: Sleep....

Bed around 2-3am, but can be as late as 6 sometimes. Up between 7 and 8am, depending. That's with the constraints of work and family, though.
Bed can also be as early as 8pm, if I'm cuddled up with the dogs.

Weekdays usually in bed between 1 and 2:30, up at 6:30-7:00 after the sneezes.

I'm most productive late night/early hours

    Re: Sleep....

I need sleep at the moment.

I'm currently suffering from a bad psoriasis outbreak which makes me look like Murphy from Z nation. The only place not covered is my face (my hands are now swelling!) so I only get about 3-4 hours sleep a day at the moment as from 3am onwards it feels like an army of ants is doing the cha-cha-cha across my skin, while it feels like millipedes are crawling through my veins.

So I tend to nod off around 11-1 am depending on how I feel and then from 4am onwards its the pain, itching and burning that rudely wakes me up!

    Re: Sleep....

I would say that I probably don't get as much sleep as I should, but strangely enough, the 2 times I've slept in for my current job have both been after I've had an early night.
