    Drone shot down. Overkill?

A US general has confirmed that an ally use a Patriot missile,, costing some £2.5m, to shoot down ..... wait for .... a £200 mini-drone bought, allegedly, from Amazon.

It seems the missile, running at 5 times the speed of sound, had no trouble taking out the 50mph drone. I should hope not.

Damn, I'm going to have to be careful where I fly,

But this does seem about the equivalent of swatting a fly with a bozooka.

I wonder who the "ally" was?

Now that sounds like overkill to an extremely ridiculous level! If it really needed to be shot down, surely there would have been easier and far cheaper methods available.

Its why for many countries having all these sophisticated supersonic jets makes no sense,as something like a jet trainer or using onboard guns makes more sense than using an expensive fighter and air and air missiles to take down anything other than another supersonic jet,but they look awesome during airshows though!!

    Re: Drone shot down. Overkill?

With the absence of boots on the ground, I'm not sure what an alternative method could be.
And even if there were boots on the ground, it would have to be a SAM launch anyway - I don't have the price of a starstreak to hand.
£2.5m is a lot of money, but without knowing what the drone's mission was - recon? explosive delivery? pathogen delivery? that cost might be justified.

I was thinking someone on the ground with a gun, as has recently been reported a number of times of some US individuals unhappy to see a drone hovering over their land.

I don't know the context of this particular drone being shot down though, so for all I know there may have actually been a very good reason that it was done the way it was.

They could have just had a couple of guys wander round, find the operator. Offer him half a million quid to hand over the drone and go home. Cheaper, but less fantastic to watch.

Unless there was a serious threat, it'd have been as quick, and again cheaper, to just scramble a chopper and bump in to it. Little Jimmy's xmas present ruined, taxpayer 2 million quid saved.

I've never seen a patriot go off, but I'd imagine there's a fairly hefty blast that's going to FSU on the ground, not to mention the debris. Can't have been anywhere built-up, can it?

    Re: Drone shot down. Overkill?

I doubt the incident took place in a location where you could safely "find the operator. Offer him half a million quid to hand over the drone and go home."

    Article link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-39277940

Recently, there have been reports that some groups, for example in Iraq, have taken to attaching weapons to small, commercial drones and using them against security forces.
So there's precedent at least, and it's definitely something the military needs to work out a cost-effective way of dealing with. Wonder if a well-aimed flare gun would take one out (potentially by detonating its munitions package )...? usually I'd suggest some form of EMP weapon, but that would almost certainly fry half the allied military equipment in the area too....

Laser CIWS - they are starting to enter operational service. The initial start-up cost is high but per shot price is very low.

Until word got out, when the world and his uncle would be buying drones in the hope of a half million quid payday, Short term fix = long term disaster.

Better bet would be to go drone operator hunting with a Predator, and deliver the cease and desist request via Hellfire. That would 'encourger les autres' right quick.

I did stop myself from suggesting a more grim, and likely, bullety repurcussion.
