There's a 'C' painted on the road. Go over this and you're registration is read by a camera and stored. You can pay with a mobile/at a local shop/other methods. At the end of the day, your registration is checked against a list of payments. If they match, great, if not, you get a fine.

There are red circles on the roads, to be honest it's quite hard not to spot them!

I'm driving in the city every day, which area did you go to?

I'd like some clarication on this as well, as I'll be driving into Central London a lot soon.

I've heard I can pay for it in Sainsbury's or something like that, and that if you get the fine, pay it as soon as possible, or else it with incur more charges.

seems a bit harsh, if i saw a circle in the road, id think? whats thats? and drive on, i wouldnt stop to think id be fined for going over it unless there was a big notice painted on the road saying 'do not cross inless u paid the CC'

but out of order, sure the red circles by the sounds are obvious, but it doesnt mean everyone knows what they stand for, and if there going to fine you for passing, you should

Theres C's painted, signs up, warning signs you are entering, every car park accepts payments, and there are pay and display style machines that also allow you to pay.

tbh, its not easy to miss it, but as advised, pay the fine pronto, for every 7 days not paid it goes up AFAIK.

And its £30 on top for it being a rental car.

Hey, I know, let's not design cities better, lets just charge people for our incompetence.

    Sounds good

I agreed with that. London should definitely be knocked down and rebuilt on a grid system.

Best way to cure congestion would be to make the tubes run 24/7 and shoot all taxi drivers on sight.

there are warning signs every quater of a mile or so before the congestion charge zone saying something like "congestion charge - £5/day - 7am - 8pm - 1/2 mile" and big signs everywhere and at junction signs marking what routes are expensive. pay now or pay more later.

    pay on the day: £5
pay in under 14 days: £50
pay in under 28 days: £100
    pay beyond 28 days: £150 + ccj + bailiffs
don't pay 3+ times: clamping + more fun

the tube can not run 24/7 continuously - it wasn't designed like that. the new york subway system can run 24/7 because there are two tunnels going each direction, so they can close one and maintain it while keeping the trains moving. night buses are cheap and plentiful anyway.

    how does congestion charging work?
well, some idiots sit in a room, which is in a huge building build with tax payers money and costs way way more than its worth, they decide how much they can legally screw the average tax-paying person out of more money and adjust the charge accordingly. now, it seems £5 has not been enough as there are rumours of it going up...
to be honest i'd rather chew glass than drive in london...or better, not be in london in the first place. I wonder why, after all the money they steal off us, they haven't actually paved the roads in gold...it would make it look far nicer and give everyone something to appreciate where their money is going...!

spot on, at 5 quid a time (soon going up to 8???? how ridiculous) they could actually probably afford to pave some london streets in gold shows how much money they rinse out of us, for using our roads, surely if we pay road tax, we should have the right to use all roads?

if its congested, thats our of fault for driving into london
