Countdown started .... Article 50 notice served

Well, after 9 months of hot air the talking about Art.50 has stopped and the doing's been done.

So now, the ....erm .... talking about the terms of exit commence.

Or rather, talking about how they're going to talk about the terms of exit.

And we only have 2 years.

I sometimes wonder how a party of four or more politicians can even agree where to go for dinner with holding a series of summits about it first.

Article 50 letter to EU, sbould anyone (other than me, and yes, I'm that sad) want to read it.

I'm pretty sure they get a Parliamentary Secretary to make all the arrangements for them then just go wherever they're told, don't they?

    Good point, Jim. Good point.

And probably to review the menu and order, too.

I wonder if they heed help cutting their vegetables into bite-size bits?

You would think so, but a PS is an MP assigned to assist a more senior Minister. You would want a PA to the PS of the MP. Or to give them their full title, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (PUSoS)

Or maybe you were thinking of a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) who would probably also have a PA, and would still be an MP.

Re: Countdown started .... Article 50 notice served

    I can see why.

You've also got the Permanent Secretary, who isn't an MP, but is the most senior Civil Servant, so they would have a PA as well.

But anyway, Brexit, eh? sucks teeth

I'm just fed up being told we should all unite behind it now. I didn't want it, I don't want it, I will never want it so why should I just blindly be pushed to make a success of it when I don't believe it will benefit me at all - just cost me. The one thing it has taught me is how damn rotten politics is - It's not about the truth AT ALL - just spin and rhetoric. (After all we now know the £350 million bus was a plain lie that persuaded many voters yet its just been swept under the carpet and that is just one example.)

Unless you're part of the Brexit negotiation team it's not really your job to make a success of anything - you just need to live through it. Success is way out of the hands of the common people now (so much for taking back control, eh) - we just get to deal with the consequences of other people's actions...

You are responsible for the success of your own life, in a Brexit Britain if you choose to stay. Personally, I think Britain will do rather well.

Yes, but that has nothing to do with the success of Brexit as a strategy. I will do the best I can. I personally will almost certainly do OK; I'm in a very stable position financially, my employment is only minimally impacted by international affairs (I've recently managed to move into a core-funded "permanent" position) and my consumption habits are price sensitive anyway so if prices of particular goods do go up I'll simply stop buying them.

I suspect Britain won't collapse horribly; we're all a bit too stoic for that anyway. I suspect that there will be increased unemployment, particularly amongst those people who've gone self-employed in the last few years (you know, the ones who are so numerous that Hammond had to change his budget because of the outcry they raised) as they'll be the ones who are most sensitive to supply chain fluctuations. We won't see the big influx of funding to public services that the leave campaign implied would be the result of a Leave vote; and we won't suddenly see the number of EU nationals and other overseas workers in the country drop (since we'll have to stick to EU border policies for the next couple of years anyway). Higher unemployment, worse public services and continued immigration will almost certainly lead to domestic civil unrest. It won't take much of a spark to light fires against that background.

So I think "rather well" is optimistic.

OTOH there is NO way to determine a success criteria in this situation. There's no control group - no way you could even have one. There's no PID, no expected outcomes, no acceptable range of outputs, nothing. We are going in to this with absolutely zero knowledge of where it's meant to lead, beyond "The UK is not a member of the EU". Well, if that's the only success criteria, it will be a success. But it's not one I'd be proud of it it was my project....

there are many good sayings for this, but the two most obvious are

    "We are where we are"
"No point crying over spilled milk"

Some people wanted to go to University, but didn't pass.
Some people wanted a new job but didn't get it.
Some people wanted not to crash their car last week but did.

If the EU was some shining beacon of civilisation I would be disappointed however in my opinion brexit is not such a bad thing. Centrally planned monetary/economic policy has been a disaster for the PIGS (Portugal Italy Greece Spain) nations and nobody mention deutsche bank!

While all true i feel saying "We are where we are......crack on" sort of misses the point, everyone has to crack on as no one has any control over what's going to happen, however that doesn't mean we should all unite behind it or that we agree with what's about to happen.

If the country voted to bring back slavery, buggery, or something else i fundamentally disagreed with i wouldn't, i couldn't, unite behind it as i fundamentally disagree, yes I'd crack on and do the best i can however that doesn't mean i won't speak out or that I'll change my fundamental belief that it's wrong.

I like the analogies, they're a good match to the brexit vote

    so what do you do?

stand in Parliament square with a poster for 10 years?
Go to war with your government?

If the majority vote it in, you have to live with it, no?

I voted stay. Staunchly believe in staying a part of the EU.

I lost, I felt sad.. now we need to leave, I'd rather crack on with it ..... uncertainty is worse.
