Arndale evacuated an hour ago, apparently....

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a7751041.html

"Fresh panic has struck Manchester following the evacuation of the Arndale Centre, where a man has been arrested.
Witnesses reported people running through nearby streets and shouting "run" on Tuesday morning...

...A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a man was arrested at the Arndale Centre, adding: "This is not currently believed to be connected to last night's attack."

There were unconfirmed reports the arrest came after a suspicious package was found in the Arndale centre's food court."

    Re: Manchester bomb attack

These are the latest details per the BBC:

"Twenty-two people have been killed and 59 injured in what Theresa May called an "appalling, sickening, terrorist attack" at Manchester Arena.
A lone male suicide attacker set off a homemade bomb in the foyer at 22:33 BST on Monday at the end of a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.

Armed police have arrested a 23-year-old man in Chorlton, south Manchester, in connection with the attack.

The first victim has been named as 18-year-old student Georgina Callander. She was studying health and social care at Runshaw College in Lancashire.

Relatives are using social media to hunt for loved ones, and an emergency number, 0161 856 9400, has been set up.

In a statement in Downing Street, the prime minister said it was "now beyond doubt that the people of Manchester and of this country have fallen victim to a callous terrorist attack" that targeted "defenceless young people". She said the security services believe they know the attacker's identity but are not yet able to confirm it."

Am I the only one who feels like the word terrorist has lost all sensible meaning? I was thinking earlier that the whole mood reminded me of the 80s and 90s when the IRA were at their busiest, but then you actually knew what they were trying to achieve. Calling it terrorism to me implies some higher goal - an end that violence is seen as a means to. In this attack (and a number of other recently) the violence seems to be its own end.

Hate crime, maybe. Religiously motivated, I don't doubt. But slapping "terrorist" onto random lone attackers gives the whole thing an air of organisation - almost respectability - that it doesn't deserve. One murderous nutjob does not constitute a serious ongoing threat.

I'll happily eat all those words if the police and/or intelligence services find connections back to a larger organisation and demonstrate that this attack was part of an orchestrated campaign. But at the minute it feels like any nutjob with a motivation to kill gets branded a terrorist, and I'm not convinced that's useful...

    Re: Manchester bomb attack

I think the term 'murder' covers it - without trying to explain it as terrorism. The only snag is that murder is an act decided by a court, and a suicide bomber by definition cannot stand trial.

I suppose terrorism is an aim - to spread terror of an unknown and unexpected violent attack, regardless of any long term gain.

He will. I don't say that gladly, I'd rather the children were still alive, but he will.

Aren't Daesh claiming this fruit loop was one of theirs? Actually fruit loop is too soft. What is the appropriate term for a callous heartless murderer of the weak and vulnerable?

They are, but that doesn't mean anything really. They are just latching onto the coat tails. Tithe perpetrator may have been know to (or even trained by them) but I doubt they did the detailed planning it knew it was going to happen.

An appropriate term? Psychopath, sociopath, coward? Take your pick.

That's unfair ..... on disgusting animals. I can't say what I'd call him or I'd have to ban myself.

read this morning they weren't carrying out bag checks, and "seemed more bothered about stopping people taking in bottles of water".

Seems like it's a misuse of security for the event's organisers to make money through selling drinks. I'd imagine this disaster could have been prevented. I'm sad that young lives were cut short.
