Dealing with maintenance issue, which is really annoying. Waiting for it to be fixed. Hanging out in town, but might do a little shopping. Tomorrow's temperature will be down to a mere 46°C, so I may even go out to enjoy it!
Thought I would add a range report.
Met up with the club at 11ish in the London and Middlesex club
this is one of many club houses at Bisley, had a quick coffee and bite to eat, then got the range details for the afternoon. Due to a large club running a competition (50+ people shooting) we would be starting at 900 yards and then moving back to 1000 yards, this combined with the wind would add a bit of extra interest at what is a stretching it range for many of our rifles. Booked my rifle out of the armoury, purchased some ammunition (ouch) and headed off to the zero range to adjust my sights for 900 and get an idea for 1000, then down to the 1000 yard firing point on Stickledown range to park the cars, unload kit and hump it down to the 900 yard point.
Stickledown has 50 targets and the maximum distance that can be shot is 1200 yards.
When we arrived the wind was pretty variable, in the photo above you can see that the nearest flag is pretty still, ones towards the target are blowing a bit more. Initial guestimate is that the wind will require me to aim left by about 40 inches, the bullet will have dropped by about 330 inches (from my zero point) by the time it gets to the target but I have dialed this in to the scope. My main aim today is to try out some new ammunition, and to practice my technique. Mainly holding the black so reasonably happy. Made a few notes, chatted to the other club members then heading back to the 1000 yard firing point when it starts to rain
Once the other club had moved back to 1000 yards and we had setup again, its time to think about the effect of the change in range and the slightly increased wind, its now a bit more gusty. I need to adjust for another 120 inches of bullet drop (adjust the turret on the scope), and increase hold off for the wind (40 -60 inches ish ). My ability to judge the wind appears to be a bit lacking so I am struggling to stay on target, but if was easy it wouldn't be worth doing. Had a chat with the other shooters and got offered a go on a rifle one of them has just assembled. This is chambered in 6.5x55, and the owner has hand loaded for long range. Very nice rifle to shoot and it handles the wind better than my .308. I am now considering trying reloading for my .308.
Luckily the rain holds off long enough for everybody to have a good shoot, but we decide to head back to the clubhouse for a coffee just before the range hooter goes to signify the end of the days shooting.

That's for sure. But of course, this is the USA where such things are 'only a theory'...
Target shooting is largely based around the club system in the UK, so the tricky part is finding a good club. Clubs do have open days where you can go along for a chat, and possibly be given an introduction and some tuition. Then you serve a probationary period before becoming a full member. Clubs do vary significantly in what they offer, some are dedicated to one discipline, others shoot a wide variety. The other way to have a go is to find one of the few open ranges that offer tutored shooting for beginners, there are only a couple that I am aware of. If you drop me a PM with the area you live I can ask on the shooting forums to see what's available near you. To give a bit of an idea of clubs and ranges
