The security of the site was not compromised. We were installing some new hardware to allow remote monitoring and the site was inadvertently pointed at the development server which is password protected for obvious reasons. Once we got hold of our host he switched it back and service was resumed. Let me just reiterate that at no time were user's password in any danger of being discovered, hacked or otherwise illegally used.

And David who is feeling *very* poorly ended up sorting it

Thanks Az for all the help - as he said what happened... I can go in to more detail now.

It was nothing to do with traffic load or anything at all.... just a muck up.

Basically we have been constantly battling high load and other issues so yesterday the following was done:

    APC master switch installed
    Firmware on the IPKVM updated

HEXUS has a load balance setup which we have not had to use yet - but last night we saw it semi kick in and the primary server did not take its IP address back.

One of the servers it mirrors to is our development box - hence the problems with the login prompt

It was very unfortunate, and we are in talks with our hosts to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Sorry guys - we are just as upset as you lot
