AFAIK,yes. Like I said Co-op is not that cheap either. At tad surprised M and S is nowhere on the list though.

Interestingly enough,Waitrose only has 353 stores, and many of those are probably the smallish ones(like a Tesco Metro) and Lidl has 650 UK stores.

The Co-op has a few 1000,but mostly very small stores.

no, Ocado as a branded delivery, offers their own products (Ocado branded), lots of Waitrose.... and lots of normal branded names like Persil or Kellogs.

they ALSO run the Morrisons delivery service for Morrisons but do not over lap the products from Waitrose or Ocado brand. They simply do the delivery process

A few Waitrose are small (up to 4 or 5 checkouts) but it's a handful. On the other end, there's some with 40+ checkouts (and I know, because I had to verify the scale accuracy when one such store opened. But most are mid-sized, with 10 - 15 checkouts.

Most co-ops, on the other hand, are pretty small, but the structure of co-ops is very different. Historically, co-op is more of a brand and a .... movement, a philosophy, and multiple companies, though there has been a series of mergers. But their ethos is more about local service and members.

You're not kidding about the JL & WR systems being different. I was at the Rushden store when that opened and it's a Waitrose Food & Home, so effectively has a mini John Lewis inside it. As a result to support both product lines it had both the (original, keyboard based,) Waitrose POS system as well as John Lewis mainframe based one. The two did NOT get on, after the store shut there was a process to export the days sales from mainframe and then import them into the WR system. At least twice a week one or both systems would crash during this process.

We may well have crossed paths, I worked in the old group C, mostly Rushden, Peterborough, St Ives, St Neots, Newmarket & Huntingdon. I was at a lot of those during till upgrades including Huntingdon which IIRC was the last branch to receive the upgrade.

In more more recent years I have seen more of the smaller ones start to open up in London to take on the smaller Tesco and Sainsbury's commuter stores, and they have been expanding into motorway service stations too, which surprised me when I saw one a few years ago. But most of them seem mid sized like they say and much smaller than the average Asda in comparison.

But it does show you that Waitrose does make a decent amount per store. I am also surprised M and S is nowhere in the list either.

Re: Lidl > Waitrose -All your Shopper are belong to us

As for M&S, it's impossible to know for sure without knowing how they define market share but it could be because it's virtually impossible to do a weekly shop with them due to a combination of few branded goods and some sections like cleaning products being extremely limited.

As such they probably have a high customer count but the item count and average spend won't get close to a full line supermarket.

Re: Lidl > Waitrose -All your Shopper are belong to us

This isn't a massive surprise based on the number of stores around the country. I'd like like to shop at waitrose but the nearest one to me is a 40 min drive away..and I live in Manchester, supposedly the 2nd UK city after London.

These days my shopping habits are 99% about convenience, 1% about product selection. Most of my shopping is at Morrisons, primarily as its on my route home from work and they are the only major supermarket aside from Waitrose who supply pre packed fillet steak at over 1.5" thick (may seem daft but if you dont want it burnt it needs to be thick when cooking!).

I also shop at Tesco & Aldi though, if taking that route home. Amazon prime now gets my business if i'm feeling particularly lazy (or hungover )

I find them all comparable on price when you take everything into account (e.g. loyalty schemes, offers), and similar in quality. You can find good and bad food in each of them and I could happily do my entire weekly shop at any of them and the bill will be within £3 or £4 of each other.

No Fresh yet but we've had prime now (1-2 hour delivery) for a year or so, within the M60 belt.

Fresh is coming - they are busy building a new warehouse up here and supposedly it will launch when thats up and running. Prime now's food range has shot up in recent months though to the point where I could do a months shopping through it. I generally don't but it would be possible.

What's the proportion of those types of workers?

I remember when I'd just got my DS3, I was bagging up and the till slave saw the key, she cooed saying that her Daddy had promised her one because of how well she did in her A-levels. Then I realised that waitrose is an acceptable job for those kind of parents that want to pretend that their children are learning the value of honest work.

I certainly did bits and pieces at Rushden, St.Ives and St. Neots, and I think both Huntingdon and Newmarket. I don't think I ever got to P'Boro. Not the WR anyway. Small world.

    A Citroën DS3?
It's a £14k car... Not exactly an Aston Martin. Back in my day kids were being bought Ford Escorts as exam presents and most of them were working class types. I never got one, because we were proper poor, but I did get a new kit bag for when I packed my stuff, left my home, went and joined the Army (If ever I 'list for a soldier again, the devil shall be me Sergeant ).

If it were those types of parents teaching their kid hard work, she'd be doing her time working the local pony stables, in betwen countryside rides. These ones are at least teaching her to pick a decent company and get shares in it, for a proper investment!
