Now I'm not a huge fan of uber, they certainly need to improve a number of things, but to revoke its licence entirely? That is surprising.

No surprised, some of the tricks they pull make VW look like the Virgin Mary. Specifically routing taxis to muck around with official monitoring, etc.
What makes it more cringe worthy is that Ubers responses, so far as I have seen, have all been about how it "restricts choice" and "puts drivers jobs at risk" rather than saying "yes, we are 'substandard' and we will work to improve ourselves and regain our licence".
I just wish the more traditional Taxi services would get with the times. Other parts of the world you go to, you will find services that have tied in with the local "official" taxi companies to provide an uber like service without the completely clueless morons behind the wheel that you get with Uber.

According to TFL they do have to take car payments, and give receipt.
https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/taxis-an...-card-payments
Information for taxi drivers about accepting card payments.
Every driver must accept card and contactless payments and provide receipts for those payments upon request.
When I broke my ankle earlier this year for 7 weeks I used Uber to get to hospital appointments etc. It was pretty good (except one bad experience) and the best value option. I paid by card and paypal, both tied to my app.
I found it good, it's a shame if it has to go but some of the things they have been accused of are quite serious. I'm sure they will fight hard to maintain their license.
I must have done about 12 journeys with them.

Be Careful on the Internet! I ran and tackled a drive by mining attack today. It's not designed to do anything than provide fake texts (say!)
They were about £1.50 - £3 cheaper than a local taxi firm, so yes. Didn't compare them to any other apps.

yes, much cheaper especially for long haul, less so for short hops, but then you'd tend to just walk those distances. Black cabs have set rates based on mileage and time of day. SFAIK Uber allows drivers to state a price they would do the journey for, and then the person selects a fare they are happy with and the uber is despatched.
I've used both, and had mainly good experiences of uber, but they are heavily dependent on satnav and I have had a time where the guy tried to take a weird route that was ridiculously not the way to my house (to the extent of going past the road to my house and starting to head to the next town out). I ended up directing him and he didn't mind - he still got paid the same and he saved the petrol. But seriously, wtf was his satnav tripping on? And one of my colleagues got held to ransom to get her mobile back that she'd left in the uber. He sat outside the office for an hour in his cab refusing to return the phone til he was paid for his services in returning it (and she hadn't asked him to drive it back to her). Had the cops got there half an hour earlier they'd have booked him, but she caved in as she needed to get to a meeting and paid the tool before they could. The cops then arrived too late to be of any use. So for stuff like that, yeah uber need to vet their drivers better.

I've used Uber, so much better and cheaper than using a taxi. I wish they treated their drivers better..
and this is the main bug bear I have with it. Do I enjoy the cheaper travel? Yes. Is it handy and easier than a cab? Sometimes. Uber has enabled journeys where a standard cab would have been out of the question due to cost. BUT once those cabs are out of business do we really expect them not to exploit the situation? As my wife points out, doughnuts now are rubbish. All the good bakers have been killed by the supermarkets and we now get substandard mass produced crap. Uber style business models kind of lead to the same outcome in their respective industries. It doesn't sit too comfortably with me that.
Which why they need to get with the times, and quickly.
It's all well and good blaming the new kid on the block because they found a way to exploit the market in such a way that it could kill off the competition, but when the rest of the market sits idle watching it happen, they only have themselves to blame.
