I don't see why they don't already. Infact industries such as this should be using it long before the public can get their hands on such things.

couldn't agree more  i thought they would of been using this a LONG time ago *hits head on wall*
My understanding (my Dad worked on the track years ago, his friends still do) is that they allready know where the trains are, as the track circuit tells the controll room where the train is. Think they would be better off spending the money improving the maintenance of the track, a friend is in charge of a track repair crew, he doesent use the railway for travel due to the condition of the track.
i havnt read the article yet, but i dont see why they should need it
the go along a straiht track, apart from the odd turn, which the track is changed by ppl a the station, all the driver has to do is not go through a red light and make sure everyones got tickets, doesnt he?

and to be rude to customers as well. Dont forget that one(i have to travel on the trains everyday so I despise them only second to buses)
Flibb is right, we don't really need GPS, we have existing systems to tell us where trains are, i.e.e track circuits.
And anyway how would you get GPS to work in tunnels / underground and in blackspots? I suppose Predictive GPS can be used, but do we want to run trains on predictions?

Do they use it on planes?
HEXUS|iMc
They're better off radio tagging all the leaves on the trees so they can prempt when to give the delayed notifications about leaves on the line![]()
haha wildmonkey, can you imagine it! someone having a job monitoring how many leaves are on the track from some remote location. then giving the signal to delay when it gets too bad! lol

i don't belive GPS is the predominant system on planes, except for maybe light aircraft i.e Cesnas (sp?). Isn't radr the main system for knowing ewhere planes are?
