Kids first "sports shirts" will soon be e-sports team

I've never ever thought of this...but it's athing.

    https://ltw.media/news/consumer-prod...ports-journey/

Steve Young, President of Activision Blizzard Consumer Products Group, .....the realization that kids’ first sports shirt will be for Overwatch, not NFL
    worth a quick read.

I can see that happening already... I see as many PC Games T's as footy T's....and the famous Youtubers on loads of clothes.
So the next logical step is that my kid might support an E-Sports team and not a "tradional" sports team.

    you think?

You think E sports merch outsells all the footy merch globally? I'd need to see those numbers this year to believe it!

    but one day.. yes maybe.

    Why not?

The below are stats from a number of the larger CS : GO based tournaments from this year, each one has hundreds of thousands of viewers and from what I understand these viewer numbers do NOT include people that travel to the arenas to watch the events, arena's that they often fill.

    1

    2

    3

    4

    5

In fact, quite often, the smaller online tournaments still attract thousands of viewers -

    Tournaments

Or look at one of the largest tournaments for DOTA 2 -

    DOTA 2

    Or League of Legends -

    LoL

And when there are football teams partnering with esports organisations, on top of this there are football clubs with esports teams.

I think people underestimate how big esports actually is and the number of people willing to purchase merchandise, shirts or otherwise, to support their teams. I certainly think that in the future, it could be possible.

Aware of this as I remember reading about Man C, Celtic Fc, PSG, Barca are all on the eSports scene (correct me if I'm wrong) and I suspect this will be brand awareness and money to be made.

You are indeed correct, Man City recently partnered with esports org Faze clan and the other teams you mention have esports FIFA teams I believe.

Re: Kids first "sports shirts" will soon be e-sports team

eSports is, in my view, likely to overtake "real world" sports eventually - it will take a while, but all the conditions are there....

It's just as (if not more) profitable than "real world" sports, the barrier to entry for players and team owners is miniscule compared to "real world" sport, but you have all the same benefits commercially. Still great advertising revenue, still able to host physical events & sell tickets, everything is just easier to put on than it is with say football.

ESPN's eSports channel has become a hit, and you only have to look at Twitch's numbers to get a feel for it. Hearthstone events near me sell out in minutes, and the last COD tournament held near me had thousands of attendees in real life, with many more watching online - and that was a local event in the north west, not even a gloabl thing.

The trick will be which game genre is going to really launch this further, and thats where you want to invest. Personally I see games like LoL/DOTA2/HOTS has having a relatively short shelf life - they have helped launched eSports but are way too specialised in terms of appeal. Similar for RTS games; as much fun as starcraft can be its not the best spectator sport imo unless you are really into it. I think the top three markets will be Football (fifa XXXX), the top FPS games (COD/CSGO/Overwatch) and top BR games (PUBG/Fortnite/Apex) globally - all 3 make great spectator sports if cast/presented right, and have a low barrier to entry.

I'm strongly consdiering setting up a team this year..if you work out the financials (based mostly on sponsorship & low level tournament wins) it can actually be quite profitable, even outside of the big names.

My only thought is that there's a potential difference between "viewer" and "fan". Certainly, merchandise-buying fan.

It's a bit like me watching xyz sports event on telly - costs me nothing and I can do it without shifting my tush off my comfy chair. But would I go out in bad weather, incur the costs of travel and tickets, to watch the same event?

    Nope.

I watch drone racing on TV. I'm certainly not about to buy the t-shirt.

I'm not saying e-sports won't be big, or even isn't already, or even disputing the threads main question. To that, I just don't know.

Just pointing out viewer stats aren't necessarily directly comparable with pbysical attendance, or fan-dom.

Might longevity be a factor? I know very little about e-sports and teams so let me ask a question, hope long is the average career, and much turnover is there?

Attention spans don't seem to be getting longer, and if there's a lot of turnover of players and/or teams could that be a limiting favour in attracting interest?

Sports teams, just looking at the UK and USA, have generations of history, quite literally passing down from father to son etc. Can e-sports match that?

    Does it need to?

Would the e-sports model be more akin to the micro transaction model, short term fans and purchases?

Average career is hard to give a number for due to no one really getting to the stage of retiring yet. 15 or so years wouldn't be too much of a shocker to me. I'm supported a team for close to 8 years in esports and there are many others like me so I think it can match traditional sport.

How does it work with turnover of games? Football, Rugby, Basketball etc. don't go anywhere. The rules change but the games remain. Consoles, games, etc. do change. Do teams and players move on from game to game?
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.

So Call of Duty has a yearly cycle for game releases and everyone moves over. When new consoles are released the option from Sony and the option from Microsoft are evaluated and whichever is seen as "best" by the community is chosen going forward. This is decided by a lot of different factors ranging from controllers to the capabilities of the console to play locally over a network and not bound to being online all of the time. The only time players don't move over is if the game is hilariously broken on launch which has only happened once I think. The major problems were resolved after a month or so though. For PC the games tend to stay the same for years on end.

Another example is Counter Strike. Counter Strike Source was released in 2004 and many professional players, played it from release until CS:GO was released in 2012 and continue to play, one such player is a player known as Get_Right who has been playing since 2003 and another known as Forest. For games like CS:GO, the game is kept interesting with the release of new maps or the remaster of older maps.

Games like Fortnite (until recently*) and APEX, keep things interesting by having seasons and each season something changers, usually parts of the map are changed, or new weapons / character etc are added.

*I say recently as Fortnite have some sort of event on which many people are saying is a brand new map.

As MLyons said, this is hard to gauge, a few players spring to mind that have retired, however a lot of these become tournament hosts / commentators / analysts while others take up coaching roles on teams instead.

Turn over in regards to players retiring is quite low, but changing teams is quite high in something like CS:GO (im using CS:GO as an example as I follow it more than something like Starcrat 2 which i used to follow), especially after a major tournament

CS was what I was thinking of when i mentioned PC gaming. Especially after being at a LAN this weekend that had lots of it. The point about going to casting or managers is a good point and is pretty common in League of Legends. Another thing that is becoming more common is ex players going to the design team to help design new content and help balance the current state of the meta. I honestly think injuries as daft as it sounds will take players out before natural retirement. Multiple prominent LoL players have been close to retirement due to wrist injuries but I think players are taking it more serious now.
