Re: 2018 The Respectful RIP List :(

This one is rather sad, a homeless man known as Kev died in Bournemouth after the local council took away his own sleeping bag !!!!!

This makes me rather angry as a human being

A double loss of two ladies that could have influenced many in this forum...

    Mary Berners-Lee (yes, Tim's mum)

I had no idea. When technical journalists grasp around for female role models in the industry, why have I never read about her until now?

    Ursula K LeGuin

The Earthsea books were some of the first fantasy books I read as a child. I loved them.

If the story about the council removing his sleeping bag is true, then ..... after a period of speechless shock, I can only swy that I hopecthe heartless or stupid council <BLEEEEP> that did such a moronic things finds himself or herself walking a few miles in Kev's shoes.

Also, just read about Ursula Le Guin and, me too, her stories were some of my earliest sci-fi. RIP, .Ma'am.

It's a tricky one. I'm not unsympathetic, far from it, but step back and let's assume that this isn't Ming the Merciless deliberately targetting the chap. They're usually too inept for such decisive action in my experience. I imagine it happened something like this: The council is probably getting complaints from local (very vociferous) people about unsightly fly-tipping and junk etc and why aren't the council doing something about it - I mean it's the 20th time we've written now and.... So someone has probably begrudingly sent an internal email to the street cleaning team that they're getting complaints. Council worker comes along, no-one is there, just a heap of stuff. So the worker does what he's been told to do, but no-one is looking at the wider picture in this instance. Heck, that's what they use community offenders for - litter picking etc. They're hardly setting policy!

Setting aside the issue of why in this day with all the relative wealth in this nation we are not doing more to help these people, there is a problem in that Council's can't just do nothing re homelessness - either in washing their hands of it, but nor can they not intervene where there is a genuine problem. I've seen building sites, shops, offices, all have homeless people sleep outside them, then cause problems during the day with
    1) leaving sleeping bags, duvets, etc rolled up (a big 1m diameter roll) in the doorway, lightwell, etc - unattended, all day. The business shopfront being severly impaired, and the adjoining unit's fire-exit blocked.
    2) kipping on a (dishevelled) sofa outside the office during business hours - seriously, they even walked into the reception and asked for a bacon roll and coffee if the receptionist was doing room service!
    3) sleeping on the doorstep (literally) and the people opening up having to step over them while they wake up and clear their possessions and the cardboard sheets to whereever it is they were stashing those.
Councils will receive complaints if this kind of thing is happening repeatedly and affecting people's homes/businesses. They're caught between a rock and a hard place.

And the short answer before people sound off, write to your MP a And while the MP wrings their hands are spouts guff about "policy" and "manifesto" and "free market economics" and "private sector blah blah", do something proactive and give money to the local soup kitchen, Shelter, Centrepoint, St Mungos etc

Somewhat late as I slack at keeping up with such things... Fujioka Mikio, who I hear you ask... well if you go wandering round the weird recesses of youtube... he's the guitarist.
