How much do TomTom charge for maps?!

This might be a festive rant, but I found myself thinking "hmm I really should update the maps on my TomTom". Now considering I pay something like £5 a month for the Live services, such as live traffic which is really rather good, I don't expect to get so screwed for maps.

Its £54 bloody quid for a years subscription!

Now as it stands I've only found one road which is out of date, as the TomTom is only 14 months old. But there is no way on earth I'm paying that.

Nokia Drive, currently beta just keeps getting better. I've already driven or cycled across France/Spain/Morocco/Thailand/Vietnam with it. Only the first two would have worked on my TomTom. But also because my phone is now really quite big (ladies, contain yourself), I think that it is really becoming much less important. Nokia's live traffic is currently not up there with TomTom (which beats google etc happily).

But also TomTom starting this month, in festive cheer have done away with google searches. I really hope they aren't pulling an Apple here.

I can't help but feel like I'm watching the death of a company now.

Re: How much do TomTom charge for maps?!

There has been an offer for a new TomTom on TV recently and that one comes with lifetime updates. That is a crazy cost for a simple update but they do have the best maps apparently.

Is Nokia Drive the one built into their Windows phones? I have seen a mates in action and it was great.

I like the app these days. £40, free updates and £17 for a year of Live Traffic. It's far from perfect but still the best that I have used.

Of course it does help tie me in to iOS

New maps for the terrible satnav in my car are more than a hundred quid.

Wow, so the consensus here is, death to the dedicated sat nav unit.

When you consider you can get a Nokia 610 for £80 today, it makes you ask for how much longer people will buy physical units.

My experience with Nokia maps is poor - it's missing many of the relatively major B-roads near where I live, and it's sent me five miles out of the way before when trying to find a specifically named shopping estate

Re: How much do TomTom charge for maps?!

i paid under £30 for 18 months map updates, if your more than 12 months out of date they don't offer the 50% off so time to buy a new one and keep it up to date, that or bag the lifetime maps and pay for the live services to route you round delays.

perfect time to get a new one in the sales

Oh its not just Garmin that do stuff like that, TomTom did it as well, only worse.

About 2 weeks after I bought mine, they started a special offer for free lifetime map updates when you bought certain, maybe all, satnavs, GRRR!

How long ago was that? I've been using it for the last 18 months without issue, but mostly outside of the UK.

I stopped using a dedicated sat nav unit some time ago.

It still sits in the glove box of the car but every time I need sat nav I reach for my phone.

The phone has a plenty big enough screen for sat nav, already has a cradle mounted in the car and auto connects to my bluetooth hands free kit so all sat nav directions come out of the in car speakers and it's very easy to hear and understand.

I tried the new TomTom app for android and found it laughable at best, they took too long to step up on that front and other apps have overtaken it.

Personally on my Xperia T I run sygic and it has never let me down once.

I'm surprised Topgear doesn't do a yearly review of Sat Navs for the best bang for buck.

Top gear is not that kind of show.

A friend of mine told me the other day that he does not like Top Gear because all they worry about is speed and looks, they don't give proper reviews of everyday vehicles.

He did not want to grasp the concept that that's exactly what Top Gear is, a show for petrol heads not consumers.

They don't review in car entertainment or car care products either for the same reason

Sat Nav reviews are best left to The Gadget Show

Whats wrong with a good old fashioned map book? Have a look before you go, remember the route in your head, or have a post-it with roads to use stuck to the dash. Job done! Having driven across Germany, Poland all over the UK using this i have no idea why anyone would use a sat-nav, removes the fun from finding the right roads and using ones own intelligence!

It's also a lot more dangerous to be trying to read a map book or bits of paper while you are driving.

People use sat navs because they are easier, usually more up to date than a map book and they are considerably safer.

it's not fun trying to navigate with a map book, a map can't tell you the road ahead has 45 minute delays and ask if you want to take a faster route. when your paid to go get your jobs done then get to go home i would take a tomtom over a map book every day of the week.
