    The Monkey End?

I had NO IDEA a banana could be opened like that!!

I have been opening it at the stalk end for ...ever

I had NO IDEA that was even a thing!

And it turns out HALF our office knew about it and the other half... no idea at all like moi.

EVERY DAY is a school day

    Always done it that way.
Wife was making banana pancakes (it's a Paleo diet thing) and, after laughing at her breaking several in a row from the stalk end, I felt compelled to teach her nature's way.

    Re: The Monkey End?

chimps are FAR advanced compared to me.

How, the hell, did I NEVER EVER try to open a banana at the other end? even once...?

I mean.... I've opened coconuts with hammers, drills, bricks... and coconuts aren't daily food.

I've eaten apples with the stalk on... and I've spun them off.
I've peeled oranges and also sliced them and sucked out the juice and flesh.
    I've peeled pineapples different ways.

so.. how with a binary combination of top or bottom.... stalk or monkey end... have i NEVER tried the other end?

    brain......fondue

    Re: The Monkey End?

Also considering that is the end the fruit pod which would naturally open if bananas where not such a strange mutant plant.

here's a fun bit of trivia
Q = Why doesn't banana flavoured stuff taste like banana's?
A = It does, but that species of Banana no longer exists.

Even the shape, etc is not the same. Its like with coconuts, did you realise there are different types?? Ones which are orange, for example??

Most commercially sold bananas are actually clones of each other and hence have very little genetic variability meaning they are very vulnerable to diseases, and as a result if one commerically available type of banana is suseceptible to a disease it is easy for all of it it to be wiped out. So if one earlier variety was wiped out,it means another probably replaced it and tasted a bit different.

In fact there is a major concern that the current popular banana varieties might be wiped out quite easily if a disease were to take hold:

The bananas here are a tad meh tasting!

Miss the bananas I had abroad, but they are the kind which won't keep well being exported!

Its like the passion fruit here, they are not that great since they are picked when they are not fully ripened. Had wild ones and they taste so much better.

    Re: The Monkey End?

I've tried the 'monkey end' thing and I don't find it easier than the other way I'd been doing it all my life. If anything it can be messy. Maybe I need more practise but I haven't been convinced.

I lived in Asia for a bit,so trust me there are far more varities than you can get over there you can eat!! Looking at the UK there are not that many types, since many of the types of bananas you can get in Asia would be uneconomic to grow in quantity and are much more fragile,ie,not economic to transport here. People's definition of what they consider a banana here is very narrow, since you are only really getting large scale commercially grown breeds mostly from parts of South America and the Caribbean. Its the same with rice, and so on.

Most of the tropical fruit you get here also has been exported to Europe partially ripe and it does not taste the same!

Like I said I don't like the passion fruit here - the wild ones I had were much nicer.

I never said there where not more varieties, just far fewer in total compared to most other fruit, around 1,000 of banana (including plantains) vs 7,500 of apple

Just to clear this up a bit, all banana's sold in the UK are Cavendish variety and not just the same variety but from the same plant.
Ok it's not 1 singular plant but all of the bananas we get are from cuttings & splits made from one singular plant.
    so they

And I'm well aware there are more types I've had a couple.
My nieces/nephews who grew up in Singapore find it weird that we only have one type of banana.
