    So it looks like at the moment going to get a piece of wood cut to my desired size at B&Q and my step dad is going to get an aluminium (painted black) "top" to go over the wood..hopefully it turns out how I want....

    You want metal over the wood??!!
    Won't that feel horrible, even if it is painted?

    I'll find out - it will be free so if I don't like it, its no big loss.

    Plus my mouse pad will cover most of it, so its not like ill be constantly touching it
