    New Desk - 200cm

    Hi all,

I am currently in the process of spec'ing up and then ordering a new PC, I will be getting 2 x 24inch monitors to compliment the PC. This brings an issue with it, in that my new desk will be to small for both monitors and with my future plan of storing my laptop on my desk as opposed to being plonked in a corner, I find myself needing a new desk.

I've been looking but so far I haven't been able to find anything I like / that suits my needs, so I was wondering if any of the wonderful Hexus lot might have an Ace card up their sleeves so to speak.

So, what I'm after is -

    • 160 - 200cm
    • Adjustable legs
    • Cable tidy area (Not a deal breaker)
    • Black / Dark Brown

As a side note, ill also be after a decent laptop stand for the desk if anyone can recommend one of those too?

    Cheers

(Half asleep so if this is in the wrong section, please move )

I had a similar problem with similar bespoke options, IKEA might be your answer.

They sell desk legs (including height adjustable ones,) and a brilliant cable tray system that can be fitted beneath any desk. If none of their desk tops suit (they didn't me,) you can get a piece of wood cut to fit from any DIY retailer /wholesaler and oil/paint it as I did or for a different finish you can get kitchen worktop cut to fit too.

A really cheap and hack way of doing it, but fantastic results.

Get a new or used desk frame, Ikea Galant is the prime target if going used.

Go to a B&Q or other kitchen worktop seller with a cutting service, find a kitchen work top that takes your fancy, 800mm deep stuff would be my suggestion. Get your kitchen work top cut to size, for free.

Screw the two together. Stick on the edge finish.

Boom - 'custom' desk, sturdy as hell, dead cheap.

If your after a custom size, have a look for local companies that do workshop benches, the one we use are box section steel, coated, with heavy duty worktops. They can be made in any size or shape. Only downside are weight, and they have to fit through your doors. Height adjustment is possible, you can add lockable wheels, cable tidy, etc.

We also have these laptop stands (older version) that allow the laptop and a screen to be mounted at the same height

Just to add links, the height adjustable legs are Ikea GERTON and the generously proportioned (I have an 8 port router sat in mine, as well as cables and power bricks,) cable management trunking is SIGNUM.

    Re: New Desk - 200cm

Thanks all, I hadn't actually thought about making my own, so to speak.

I have Galant legs / frame at the moment.... I guess with a desk thats 200cm I'd need a further leg in the middle to provide some support.

Hmm I think a trip to Ikea is in order this weekend.

Yeah, a 5th leg would probably be best for additional support. I'd definitely recommend kitchen worktop for the top surface if you can find a finish you like. It's much sturdier than normal table top. The slight downside is it's a touch thicker and there are only a couple of standard depths (800mm and 1000mm IIRC.)

I currently have a 200x60x2.8cm worktop sat on top of a 160cm Galant frame and four legs (20cm overhang on both ends) with no deflection at all. Also there's no sway even with the cheap adjustable leg option.

The lateral frame bars are 30x30x2mm steel square sections, they're pretty strong. In fact, I've even drilled and tapped M6 bolt holes in to them towards the centre to mount a monitor stand.

I will have to check what frame I have at the moment, from memory and looking at the desk its the smaller version so I may just buy the legs / frame and then find something suitable for the top

    Re: New Desk - 200cm

I did the whole adjustable legs from Ikea, cable tidy tray from Ikea and two kitchen worktops from Wickes for a L shape desk in the 'office' Strapped ther power bars under the work surface, cut some holes with a holesaw to route the cables, all for less then a large desk and more usable space with no gimicks i didn't need.

Depends, the tops i have sit on a battons on 4 sides and then small brackets secure the top to the battons, the adjustable legs i have fit along the longest part but are spaced to give the most room.

    Re: New Desk - 200cm

I had a similar question last year - and in the end plumped for the IKEA Bekant 160cm desk in black/brown. They are fairly thin but really strong, and have plenty of space for my 2x24" screens + keyboard/giant mouse mat + speakers + more....especially if you use monitor mounts rather than stands. They hold perfectly on the desk and free up a boatload of space, which means what could feel a limiting 160cm desk into one with loads of room

I bought it with 2 legs (they are the "feet" style) which have 20cm of height adjustment. The desk comes with basic cable management in the form of a movable net underneath, which holds my power cables and lets me route cables effectively so nothing gets in the way.

It doesn't work out particularly cheap at £150, but they really are decent quality and looks great imo. Here is the direct link (price includes all the bits you need - individual parts are listed separately if you want)

    http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/d...-spr-49022798/

and these are the monitor mounts I used

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Singl...NV73EYJC58C2T7

Here is a (bad!)picture just after I built it, with a 24 and 23" mounted. It's before I routed the cables properly though. Ignore the desk on the right thats just a cheap Linnmon (they are made from cardboard, not at all suitable for monitors) that I have setup for 3D printing.

I've had it in place for about a year now with no issues, no complaints.

    Re: New Desk - 200cm

It's really hard to look beyond Ikea for desks nowadays. Don't forget to have a look in the "seconds" section - my last desk was a chunk of worktop from the seconds section of Ashton Ikea (can't remember if it was slightly scratched or an offcut off-hand) plus four of the cheapest bog-standard legs.

Kitchen worktop makes for a very sturdy desk (I built my partner a desk out of the offcuts when we had our kitchen done last year ) as long as you're sensible with the height and choice of chair, and it's unlikely to bow significantly. As others have implied, if you're worried about the middle sagging you can bring the legs in from the edges, or add additional legs for support.

If you don't mind investing though, it might be worth a quick shufty at the dining tables too - they've got some nice new lines recently that would make very acceptable working spaces. They might be a little more expensive than the equivalent size of desk, but they do several that hit 2m or more in length....

If you have a plane, you could edge joint some solid wood boards together and customise that to whatever size/shape you like. Tidier than chipboard kitchen worktops and no raw edges or spoiled laminate...
Can be quite cheap, too - I knocked up an entire 8'x3' workbench with a 4" thick top for less than £100. The offcuts made a pair of sawhorses, as well!

At the moment my plan is to go for a walk around Ikea and the local B&Q on Saturday and see what both have to offer in store.

At the moment I am leading towards buying -

and the cable tidy thing previously linked then seeing what I can find in B&Q (unless I stumble across a suitable top in Ikea)

Will probably end up drilling a hole in the top for cable routing purposes

They sell desk legs (including height adjustable ones,) and a brilliant cable tray system that can be fitted beneath any desk. If none of their desk tops suit (they didn't me,) you can get a piece of wood cut to fit from any DIY retailer /wholesaler and oil/paint it as I did or for a different finish you can get kitchen worktop cut to fit too.
Yep, ikea did my old one perfectly.

Alternatively, yes most homebase stores offer you a free cutting service.
