    Digital camera release!!

well, as expected Canon release an update to their successful 300d, called rather unimaginatively, the 350d...
    http://www.dpreview.com/news/0502/05...on_eos350d.asp

so, its basically the 20d in a 300d shell...wonder where that puts the 20d now? beaten by the under-dog. mind you nikon did that with the d70 against the older d100...

...well guys, what do you think?

    1) I'm glad I didn't just upgrade to a 20D.
    2) Anyone who buys a 350D in silver deserves to be shunned by all people with taste. Or are they cameras for blind people? Yeeeeuch!

EDIT> Shiny silver metal=nice. Matt silver plastic=tacky. Will always be so.

wonder whether the other people (Olympus, KM, etc?) will follow suit with more "budget" DSLRs?

i think we'll be seeing a spate of 6-8 mpix cameras over this year and then after that just updates with no real increase in the mpix count. at the 8mpix resolution we've got there's no real advantage going any higher - certainly not up to the whopping 16 on the flagship dSLR canon have released. 8mpix is more than enough and can be blown up massive with only a little tweeking here and there (loss-less enlargement software etc can get things poster sized and above).
I think 8mpix is a rough ceiling and then we'll just see noise reduction more than anything else, along with wireless connections (already in nikon's top ones) and other gizmos we'll hardly ever use but its nice to have in the first place.

actually it wasn't impossible to predict this update as canon have dropped the price of their 300d along with rebate to shift them off the shelves...makes room for this.
Now, Nikon are doing a rebate on the d70, could we see an update from them any time soon? Nikon are a step behind canon in dSLRs...it would be nice to see them bump up a notch or two as their recent d2x release is only 4.1 mpix!

I just got a 300d, but don't really feel robbed as it worked out at £500 and was paid for by selling my car. And its a great camera. If I get time i will post some of the pics my brother took at my wedding in calcutta with it!

I can't agree. That's like saying 35mm is good enough- it is, until you see the quality medium format is capable of. 8Mpix will not resolve as much detail as you can get with 35mm film, so there certainly is a reason to go higher for some people. You could very clearly see the difference on the 15"x10" prints I printed on the Fuji Frontier we had in the shop I used to work at.

That said though, I would rather see the size of DSLR CCDs get bigger rather than the pixel density get higher. The smaller the pixels, the more noise becomes an issue.

apparantly from what ive read the new sensor in the 350d should have less noise than the 300d due to technical wizardry and i have to say i believe that it is probably true although the proof will no doubt show its self with some real photos in the near future

I really must look into a Digital SLR to replace my now aging Sony P7 (was 2nd best at one point)

ok, Lets clear a few things up.
...This 350d has the digic2 sensor, the same as in the 20d and the one above that (which is basically a 20d with better weather proofing at 3 times the cost... ).
This new sensor is higher in resolution (8mpix) than the 300d (6mpix), and creates less noise (at all iso's). the 300d is infact a 10d but in a different body with a few features shut off [you can enable them with a software hack giving you greater iso speeds, mirror lock-up and several other things.
I'm not sure about flash sync speeds - the d70 still beats the 20d on that (!)].
If they increased this sensor size to that of say a 35mm frame - while maintaining pixel density - with current technology you'd have to shell out loads of dosh, and considering 95% of consumers who get these dSLRs (at least this end of the range) will not be printing up to much more than 12 by 10 so resolution much more than currently available is not entirely necessary and hence money goes towards improving the camera functions etc. Its not all about resolution kids
CCDs are becoming phased out, nikon will be using LBCAST and canon the CMOS. each do the job equally well - its more about the technology after the sensor that converts light to data thats more crucial. Sony make CCDs, nikon use sony CCDs and so do sony (in their powershot cameras) so when it comes to comparing quality its more often down to the software/hardware combination than just the sensor itself. Yes a good sensor IS important, but without the decent back-up from good software you might as well get out your sketch book and get drawing...!

whilst I accept the arguement for 35mm vs medium format it is important to recognise NO standard has ben set for digital. Who's to say a 35mm frame is best for digital anyway? it seems most are settling in the 1.5-1.6 cropping ratio when compared to the 35mm frame, which suggests its becoming more of a standard than anything else at the lower end of the dSLR market. People still produce fantastic pictures with whats out there so why would canon/nikon/anyone else bother changing it? its just a different medium with which to work with...what was before 35mm? I dunno but it clearly settled to that standard so it may well be we're at the point for dSLRs where its no longer about finding the right frame size but tweeking the processing and capturing of images (less noise).

the expected selling price for the 350d should be around £700...i.e. the same region as the well grounded D70 - which is doing a £100 cashback at the moment, so we could be seeing a D70 replacement any day too (copying canon every step of the way it seems!)

Oh and if you intend getting one guys DON'T GET TEH SILVER ONE!! urgh!
despite all the praise we might give canon for their innovation its clear the 'exterior designers' took lessons from that gonk laurence lewellen-bowen, its hideous. Black is far far nicer, get one of those - or be laughed at by use all

looks cool, has lots more functions to customise/play with!

edit: now for a bit of camera porn...
    http://www.dpreview.com/articles/Can...pecsview01.jpg

edit #2: with the price of body only set at around £620 and with lens £760 its not a bad bit of competition to the D70. whats the bet we see it up at around £1000 though thanks to unscrupulous dealers

Only thing that I am worried about with the 350 is the size.. from what I've read, it's slightly smaller than the 300, and that's small enough..
    Quoth the server... "404"

yes it is small...smaller than the 300d. in fact i wondered why too, as why do the constantly try to show off about how small they can maek it? i'd prefer a bit of chunk if it means its less likely to break!
