Today, 19th April 2018, Billy Bragg talks at the Bank of England :-)

    This makes me happy.

I'm actually a light-weight capitalist... but I do truly genuinely enjoy Billy Bragg and have followed his music, which verges on genius in places, for decades.

And today, at about 4pm he's going to give a speech in the Bank of England

I cant begin to tell you how happy that thought makes me.

He was on Radio4 this morning, and as ever, stood his ground brilliantly. He calls for accountability, and (sadly in my eyes) even more regulation, but .. he does it for good intent I believe.

Not sure who I wish more luck too... the heart of our financial structure, who are letting in a very powerful character to lecture them... or Billy, who is walking into, I hope, a bloody hard fight.

It makes me smile though... 2018 is a weird year and this makes it weirder!

Banks were given light touch regulation and it failed, and what capitalism?? The only capitalism is realistically done by small and medium business owners who have to survive the litmus test of the market with minimal support. Larger entities end up on government support(essentially monopolies like some state owned corporation) or are "too big to collapse" so get bailed out by the taxpayers,so they can act recklessly, and you can see the big issue with pensions in this country, which is the next crisis which is going to hit. Yet all the people profiteering from this all,get away with it.

So they need stringent regulation to make sure they don't take risks with OUR money and the money invested by their employees since they were shown to be incompetent.

The bank bailouts have lost the UK taxpayer at least £27 billion:

That is added to the national debt, which means future generations are the ones who have a chain around their neck. We have annual interest payments of £43 billion a year.

At some point when they are shown to be more responsible, then we can think about reducing any regulation.
