Old PC Parts

Hey Guys

Got a whole bunch of old hardware sitting about and don't know what to do with it.

A few years ago when I was in the same situation I was pointed in the direction of a charity in Birmingham by KeyboardDemon but they no longer take PC parts.

Ideally don't want to bin them as they still work but yes they are old. I got three lots of mobo, RAM, CPU and HSF and some other stuff.

Open to ideas as have no use for them myself, family all have machines so they don't need them either.

They are handy in the retro gaming community, a basic system that can run DOS and Windows 95/98 and that has an internal floppy drive so you can write discs for the various formats.

I agree, Freecycle, people will have them off your hands in no time. You will be amazed the stuff people will take.

Yeah, I did think about freecycle but these days its mostly full of ebay sellers that feed there shops from free stuff looking for profit. Would prefer it to go to a good home and not there to make someone money for nothing.

I couldn't give away much of my stuff. I finally put my fully working Pentium 4 through the wash and mounted it in a picture frame. Immortalised it along with the Abit motherboard.

how old is old? And what kind of stuff? Some of us run old systems quite happily... eg a 1156 mobo that would otherwise be going in a skip would be something I might prick-up my ears for.

Also just cos in the UK it might be old don't assume your kit is completely redundant until you see what people make do with out in Africa etc.

Talking X38, DDR2, Radeon 3870 era. Think one of the mobo's is even older than that cause i think it has DDR1 in it!

ah yeah. that is old. I still have a P4 with DDR400 and a Geforce5200 that I occasionally have need to fire up. Amazing how slow it feels. It does however run some old software nicely that for whatever reason simply won't play nice on win7+
