Looks like Google discovered a security breech in its social networking site and is closing it down

Not something I am bothered about as I don't use it - but another big corporate losing control of user data.

I honestly don't understand why they hadn't shut it down long ago, it's been clear for a long time that their social networking play failed, so this was the final nail in the coffin to wake them up to that fact.

Well I did previously use it to organise game nights with friends. It had a great events function that even meant we could run a hangout at the same time (for things like Keep Talking and No-One Explodes), sync'd with calendar that most people used and there was enough chat space for conversations about plans without getting out of hand. But they 'improved' that functionality a while ago now and we haven't been able to use it since. Not sad it's going as I don't think they knew what they were trying to do with it and it was non-functional a while ago, shame it went that way as (aside from the google spying) a good way of organising social contact and didn't encourage/sneakily enable wider sharing at every opportunity like Facebook.

As for the security issue, I guess it wasn't designed as tightly focused on limiting access as thought. I'm hoping they were at least honest about the fact that no third party had exploited the issue.

For certain games like Ingress it was useful for organising stuff(as G+ was kind of integrated into certain aspects of the game),but its been in life support mode for a while,so probably a good thing.
