    Are you paranoid?

Had a meeting in work re: data storage/GDPR etc. Had a discussion with colleagues, one colleague went to the lengths of paying everything with cash, has no direct debits (except his wages of course) or standing orders and stuff.

Never quite understood the issue why people go to these lengths, a lot more in life to be worrying about other than data being collated. If someone wants it, they'll get it one way or another.

Me personally, couldn't give a fudge, pay everything with card as its quicker and apply direct debits where possible.

Newsletters? Emails? Subscriptions? Are you paranoid?

    Re: Are you paranoid?

Is there some middle ground between 'not giving a fudge' and 'paranoid'? Perhaps being concerned about privacy isn't paranoid at all.

I didn't realise you worked with Saracen.

More seriously, I'm leaning more and more that way. Utilities and stuff I don't bother (they know where I live anyway,) but shops etc certainly don't need to.

Any newsletters etc are sent to an email address for that purpose and I'm reducing my online footprint as far as possible.

    And they are.

    No really, they seriously are.

Of course, by "get you" I mean collect, warehouse, manipulate and data-mine every little bit they can get their hands on.

Macman, I'm not paranoid, certainly not in the conventional sense. I do not believe some evil genius, or even Google, is targetting me. Do they care if I exist? No.

But what they, and many many others absolutely, categorically and unequivocally are doing is gathering data on everybody.

Why? Initially, targetted adverts. But, that's the thin end of the wedge and once they've got the data, it's anybody's guess that will be done wuth it next year ir in 10 years.

But what is certain is they cannot warehouse and mine what they don't have.

So, if you don't care, you're really buying a blooming great pig in a poke, that not only you don't mind today's uses, but you also don''t mind whatever it is they decide go do with it next, without having ANY idea what that might be. It could affect hour job prospects, your chances of travel insurance, your motor insurance premiums (perhaps because a higher than average booze bill us on your credit card), or whatever.

My view is that the ONLY control we have over the data that describes our lives is before we let it get out there. Once the data genie is out of the bag, you aren't getting it back in.

So perhaps what you regard as paranoid is sctually merely careful, cautious and sensiible, and the carefree "don't give a hoot" approach is actually careless, even reckless and taking chances with your future because you don't understand the risks. After all, none of us know what will be done with that data, or profiles derived from it, in the future.

So really you assume that the intentions of these megacorps gathering data are not inimical to your best interests. Because I don't assume that, I take all reasonable, practical steps to mitigate possible future abuses.

Paranoid? No. Careful, yes. Because I don't trust Google, FB, banks, etc to use my data i my best interests. Why not? I refer you go their past actions and would suggest history predicts leopards don't change their spots.

But if you trust them ??? Fair enough. I hope you don't live to regret doing so.

    ^ This!

Many of these already can and do look you up on Farcebook and things, where you quite readily post pics of you and your mates getting drunk and doing stupid stuff... which means you don't get a job.

But at the extreme other end, giving away all those details about yourself means someone else can know these things. And who would know so many private, intimate details about your life other than you?
Last five things you bought on card, where you went on holiday, what you wore to Jenny's wedding way out in Mallorca, what porn you watch... You wouldn't believe the checks done and the sort of details researched for an MoD job!!
But all the details ^they check are legitimately sourced. Other people can find out similarly, but use them to impersonate you.

So when you find your ID has been stolen, your bank account emptied and nothing to prove you are who you are, even though you're the only one who ought to know this stuff, feel free to hop back to this thread and tell us we're paranoid.... assuming they haven't also stolen your login here, that is!

    Can't happen?
    How much you wanna bet?

You're preaching to the choir with me I'm afraid as I'm well aware (at least i think I'm aware) of the power that data can have and not just for advertising purposes, that's fairly inconsequential IMO as i can ignore/block advertising, what worries me most is how governments and NGO's can use meta data to influence public opinion and control the narrative.

I've no intention to turn this into a partisan thing but you only have to look at what cambridge analytica (i only mention them as their the most well know) did to know how meta data can be used....i could go on forever about the power of meta data, how dangerous something like the Snoopers charter (a Blair project) is to society and democracy as a whole.

For anyone who isn't at least a little concerned may i suggest watching this short Ted Talk.

There is that, and it might justify careful, sensible use of cards but not spraying data around like a peeing drunk.

As for credit, it's about more than just data. How much outstanding credit? Do you pay on time? Do you miss dates? Are utiluties, etc, paid on time. What loans do you have? How were they paid?

    And so on.

But it also depends on your circumstances. If I want to buy a house, I don't need credit to do it. Ditto car. Etc. I have no problems with broadband, etc, contracts, and last time I wanted a contract mobile phone, no oroblem there, either. These days, I neither want nor need a mobile phone on contract, and I don't imsgine I'll ever want or need any loans. If I do, the asset base is solid, as is payment history.

Despite (or perhsps because I'm a good risk, with zero outstanding balances beyond TV/broadband) I have no trouble getting credit. It's more llke having to fight offers off with a stick. To the idiots that keep sending me letters, no, I don't want a loan, insurance or your credit card, thankyou. What I do want is for you to quit pestering me about it.

Can we interest you in our new financial banking card? We here at wungomumbojumbomiraclecashquick.com believe you are our ideal customer. No credit history necessary, and we've even pre-filled in the form for you, just so you can be credit frauded if you throw it away without shredding it first. We're great like that. Now sign on the line and enjoy your new card. Look! It has a seahorse on it. And a glowing unicorn. That means you can trust us.

The holographic image of the empire states building? Oh that's just a phallic symbol of the way we shaft, on a great scale, the unwary customer who blunders into our snare. But it's shiny, so why wouldn't you?

<lots of legal jargon later> only 280000% AER, your house may be repossessed if you do not keep up your payments (and we hope you won't. Property is most lucrative these days.) Bet you didn't even bother reading to get to this bit.... sucker!

In my previous "job" yes. Now? Not so much. I block most stuff apart from for sites shown to have decent adverts, use fake info in a few places and have multiple emails for different things. buying one off things from websites, everything else, and personal stuff all have a different email address. That's without going into the multiple email addresses i have for work. 2 Just for HEXUS. I feel like adding false data is much more effective that people seem to believe.

Yes, I create disposable e mail addresses for purchases - that way I know if the address has been sold/hacked and I can then dispose of it.
