err, Derby had a bit of mining. Coal included, as well as lead, copper, tin etc. I can recall going on a school trip of an old copper mine in the peak district.

Of course what you REALLY dig out of the peak district is rocks - gypsum, limestone, gritstone and slate. Still some huge quarries round here.

It still freaks me out the Manchester had coal mines, mind you. Really not what you think of when you say Manchester...
