Mad Cow Disease (BSE) found in Scotland! October 18

Lots of you are too young to remember Mad Cow disease....bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)

but it ruined huge swathes of UK farming in the 80's and 90's and it took a huge amount of time to recover from that

Well .....it seems there's a case in Aberdeenshire

only one, but that's still one too much

I'm too young to remember Mad Cow, but Foot and Mouth, I'm old enough to remember.

Growing up in Cumbria, around 10 years old, driving past farm after farm and field after field of burning cattle and sheep. Having people in bio-suits hosing down your car, not being allowed to go off the main roads on walks.

Fingers crossed it doesn't get to that kind of thing again.

It's a very different disease from Foot and Mouth, and one case here or there isn't unexpected or indicative of a massive problem. The human epidemic of vCJD hasn't materialized... Yet....

Sorry, I just wanted to be a part of the conversation and sound like I knew anything about it.. Health folk are saying we have nothing to worry about though.

It is nothing to worry about... BSE is a health scare because, under very limited conditions, it can pass to humans, while foot and mouth doesn't (generally mostly). BSE and vCJD are fatal, but have a very long dormant period before symptoms occur. This ramps up the fear factor, because millions could be infected and not even know it! (Except, not really).
