He got the tone and volume pots stripped out and everything wired to the jack to minimise attenutation, then had a few other tricks in the interal wiring.

Slightly delayed. One for the software developers here ... Joe Armstrong, creator of the Erlang programming language, and all-round well respected gent, died recently :(

Erlang is perhaps most famously used to build the WhatsApp platform, so Joe's work reached a big segment of the world's population! Forgive the developer in-joke, but ... thanks for the messages Joe.

I'm going to expand on g8ina's very timely post that today, the awesome force that was Niki Lauda, has passed away.
When I was tiny, I watched F1 cars hurtling round the race track on a family TV with a bulging glass screen, so larger than small gold fish bowl. James Hunt was my hero.. he was a Brit with raw physical appeal.
But he raced against someone more awesome.....an Austrian man who crashed in a ball of flames, suffering horrendous burns... and who in 6 weeks, with skin grafts still loose on his face was back racing, boody trickling out from under his helmet where the skin had come loose.
Next time you see a footballer writhe in agony on the pitch, think on this -

now imagine 6 weeks laters, pulling on a skin tight helmet and overalls over the horrenous pain of those burns....

that... there.. that there is a hard core sportsman who never gave up.
And it was F2 drivers who pulled him out of that ! All top top lads.
And later.. he argued and fought with the top F1 team bosses to drive Mercedes to the top of the pile.
He created his own air line too....
That.. that's a bloody hero, right there. RIP Niki... top top legend.

indeed, one of a kind; sad for the loss to the world :(
Re: 2019 The Respectful RIP List :(
And +1 endorsement for Zak's comment - Lauda was truly astonishing in that comeback, the paramedics after the crash having said they didn't expect him to last the night. Stunning.
And a genuine loss.
