EU proposes to end "Daylight saving time" across the EU

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45366390

There are three time zones in use across the EU, reflecting the needs of countries base on both their latitudeand longitude. Daylight saving time in te UK means lighter mornings in the Winter, and lighter evenings in the summer.

Other countries do the same thing for similar reasons.

The EU is proposing to abolish this clock changes giving a unified European time. However these are only proposals ant the consultation stage.

Everyone should just use UTC and mutually arrange their business around local conditions. It's a silly concept to think that you can cut an hour from the end of the day, stitch it to the beginning of it, and pretend that you've given yourself more time.

I don't think anyone is saying it gives you more time. It's about having the daylight in parts of the day where it is most useful. No one, save for some seriously confused people, think it means somehow having more daylight in an absolute sense. I say that mindful that in Queensland I'm reliably told there was a genuine state parliament debate where concerns were raised about (amongst other things) curtains fading more due to the extra light, and cows getting confused. So it seems it is an incorrect assumption people have made, and presumably still do.

Well, the cow problem is easily addressed - give them all auto-adjusting watches so they won't be confused.

But seriously, doesn't this get discussed in the UK Parliament every few years? Or at least it used to before they took to debating B-word 25.6 hours per day.

I have a nagging remembrance that when I was doing my Working Holiday* in Oz in 2001-2002, there was a state that was 1/2 an hour out from its neighbours. Now that is getting petty.

Re: EU proposes to end "Daylight saving time" across the EU

In all seriousness, I'm not sure of the effectiveness of the change. Apparently, when it was first introduced, road accidents were reduced in the mornings, as kids were going to school in the light. But this was negated by the increase in road accidents in the afternoon, cos kids were going home in the dark. Might just be hearsay...

I have no problem with no clock-meddling, but I think sticking to BST would be best, and not just so Scottish people get longer being eaten alive by midges.

I spent some time in a country which was half an hour out. Really annoying...
