Indeed, but that's what I was trying to avoid ... i.e. to narrow down more. There's a lot of Arabic-speaking countries.

For instance, countries with a coastline on the Red Sea would have included Saudi, but also Ethiopia, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, etc but excluded Iraq, Iran, Syria and so on. Much the same logic applies to the body of water including the Persion Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea but with different countries included/excluded.

Same question but on the Med covers Libya, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Turkey.

But I'm not at home and can't remember exactly all of which are where.

I take the point about deployments, etc .... but he didn't say he wasn't just on holiday.

So, TeePee .... does it have a coastline on the Mediterranean?

And don't take my examples as an exhaustive list. You'll need to check, if you don't already know.

I checked very carefully, and No. 11.

Understood. This specific location is closer to Asia than it is to Europe. Although I would point out that part of Turkey is in each continent.

    Ooh, you're sneaky, aren't you!

Never mind Turkey, IIRC, you could be in either Europe or Asia while in Istanbul, depending on which side of the Bosphorus you are.

And NO .... that wasn't a question. It was a statement, requiring no answer, and certainly not one that counts.

We need to be careful (or very lucky) folks because this is harder than it looks. He did ask for, ideally, country and city, and we've blown through 50% of our questions and still don't even have the country.

What's not helping me is the only Atlas I have here is both tiny in scale, and old. Abd by old, I mean it still lists not only Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, but also Ceylon. Seriously.

Also, an extremely tenuous and slow wifi connection to a BT Fon hotspot that appears and disappears like a will-o-the-wisp.

So I'm not sneaky at all, in fact, I'll give you a freebie! I'm not in Yugoslavia, The Soviet Union or Ceylon.

    Re: 20 Questions.

Yugoslavia doesn’t exist any more, but the former Yugoslavia is Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Hertzogovenia, Kosovo, Montenegro and North Macedonia! . So in theory that rules out an additional 7 countries - unless TeePee is being very sneaky!

I thought from the "checked very carefully" hint he might be in Morocco since it borders the Atlantic and the Alboran Sea (not the Med - contrary to what you might think at first glance) but that would be nearer Europe than Asia so it can't be that.

Thanks. That helps .... in the words of the late Paul Daniels .... not a lot.

I had suspected you weren't in any of those, on the basis that they not longer exist, and that Arabic isn't the first language of any of them. But thanks. I think.

I'm here for you! Turkey is, of course also ruled out by the Arabic language... Getting closer!

Using coastlines and bodies of water could be a good way of narrowing it down, since most countries have some kind of coastline!

Can I just confirm, and this isn't a yes/no question, the basis on which we're discussingvlanguage. I think when Bagnaj first raised language, he was talking about "primary written language". I might have referred more to "official language" which isn't quite the same, though in most countries there will be a substantial overlap. Arabic certainly is used ib Turkey, even taught in recent years in schools but very much as a minority.

I think we're both judging by the same yardstick, but can you just confirm what you are meaning? Ta.

Except that, according to the several resources I checked, the Alboran Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea - the western portion of it. The most authoritative source is probably marineregions.org, but even good ol' Wikipedia says the same.

And on that basis, if a country has a coastline on the Alboran Sea, by definition it has one on the Med.

P.S. Thanks, TeePee. This thread has me looking up all sorts of things I never expected to, and it's fascinating. I love learning like this.

And I'm utterly sincere on that, not being sarcastic.

Great thread .... even if it's giving me a headache.
