    Re: 20 Questions.

how about we try something around the tropic of cancer:

options to ask - i) is it on it? ii) entirely south of it, iii) entirely north of it.

Arabic certainly is used ib Turkey, even taught in recent years in schools but very much as a minority.

I think we're both judging by the same yardstick, but can you just confirm what you are meaning? Ta.
So interestingly, when I first thought of this thread, I was in Djibouti. Sadly I lacked internet access, and the idea of 'Where was I' just seemed like cheating. Aside from being excessively evil, Djibouti would have made those language questions (Which were a fantastic way to go!) far more complicated. The official languages being Arabic and French, primary spoken language Somali, and written in the Latin alphabet.

Rest assured, in the location we are talking about, the Official, primary and alphabet are all a dialect of Arabic.

    Re: 20 Questions.

Thinking out loud again, and to other guessers .... I'm intrigued about TeePee's answer when I asked about the Med, and suggested he check if he doesn't know, and the actual answer was "no" but he added "I checked carefully".

Here's my thought .... if he had to check carefully, does that imply that it's an Arabic-speaking country with a coastline that isn't on the Med but is very close? I mean, if we were 1000 miles out, I rather doubt a pro pilot would need to 'check' if there was a Med coastline. Or was that thriwaway comment a red herring?

If it does mean it's close enough he HAD to check, that would very much narrow the options.

As for tropic of cancer, I dunno mate. It's certainly a good thought but might it have been better used much earlier? Is it too late now? If we're right in the general area of close to the Med but not on it, then it's too wide an area.

    If.

    Two things worry me.

    1) Don't waste questions IF we're in the right area. But are we?

    2) Did we actually establish for certain where he is (or was) actually has a coastline at all?

Oh, and I have a very clear mental image of TeePee sitting there wearing an enormous grin reading this, watching us (or at least, me) flounder about. I'm beginning to doubt where I am, never mind where he is.

    Anyone got a spare Tylenol?

So pretty much yes, to the grin!

Last time I did 'Where am I' someone worked it out from a stair railing. I'm just glad this has presented a challenge!

Jordan is arabic speaking, has no mediteranean coastline and is nearer asia than Europe (being in Asia). It has a small amount of coast to a branch of the gulf IIRC but that is all.

    Re: 20 Questions.

    Interesting idea.

It'll need careful phrasing to get maximum value of out of the yes/no restriction, so I'd suggest looking at a list of candidate countries, and then working out which have what structure.

Very good idea, though. Nice and lateral.

    Re: 20 Questions.

Can someone summarise where we are at? What is the shortlist of countries and how many questions are left?
[This is not a question to the OP but to the forum - so if OP answer, it's a contribution and therefore should not burn an answer to this]

    Re: 20 Questions.

    10 Questions remain!

The country uses Arabic, both as an official language, and as the primary written and spoken language.

The country does not have a Mediterranean coastline.

The country was not a part of the Soviet Union.

It is closer to Asia than to Europe.

It is not in East Asia.

    It is not Gallup, NM.

It is not in Saudi Arabia.

    It is not Djibouti.

Good Luck! Everything to play for!
