Thats it, I'm done with computers

Built up a newish rig outta a few old bits n bobs at the start of the month, got over the initially teething problems and its been running stable ever since (did 72 hours running toast to really test it) Switched it on this afternoon to do my i.t coursework (deadline tommorow) nothing too hard just an excel database and a few pages explaining what it does etc.

Checked my emails/forums first and was about 30 minutes in and it did the computer equivalant of keeling over and dying for no reason, just shut down and left the cpu overheat siren going off. left it ten mintes came back booted up fine with a cpu temp of 47 degree's, "thats alrite, its a bit warm in here after all" open up word and start typing again and it dies again, same thing. Opened it up, bled the watercooling and reseated the cpu, same thing happened again after 20 seconds. I've had nothing but random problems over the last few weeks with this board, the onboard network failed last weekend, wasn't too fussed cos i'd got a network card spare and I cba to rma but still, this mb has built a reputation as one of the most stable for socket A p.c's on this forum and others, sod it, i'm off to buy an old Pentium 3 500mhz system like the one i'm on now, this things been running fanless and without upgrades other than an extra 128mb of ram the week after i bought it for 3 years!

People who say technology moves forward are severely wrong

As it is now i've gotta do an excel database and write up in the next 18 hours on a computer that won't even load windows, My ZX81 was more reliable than this

Having a rough time aint you bud ?

I have a SSF here (Abit digidice), if you can get to mine, your more than welcome to just take the thing and get your work done !
Did you ever get your BIOS sorted ? ive got 2 weeks off uni from today, if you need anything, just let me know and we'll sort it out. Hell, bring your entire system here if you want and we'll strip it down and do a total rebuild.

Thanks for the offer man but there's no way i can make it to yours tonight, gotta go out for a meal for my little brothers birthday later on, was planning on making it an early hours/all night job, besides I'd never expect anyone I know to lend me a floppy drive, let alone they're own p.c.

Nah i never did get the bios on that machine fixed so i might have to bring a few bits up to yours at some point during half term and get my **** together.

This is just the final straw though now, all the other problems i've had have pissed me off but ffs I build computers for other people all the time sometimes of a higher spec than my own and they work perfectly forever and a day, all I want outta my own rig is 5 hours of time for me to work in and it just kicks up its heels, ridiculous doesn't even begin to describe it

Thats the thing with computers, they will let you down but we will always return to them.

Its the singularity theory you see.

    Bad luck matey

At least you have a spare computer or two to do your work on?

That's why I always recommend people keep at least one old crappy PC when they upgrade, just incase things like this happen. I have a couple to choose from if mine goes severely south, but touch wood it hasn't ever happened for more than about 12 hours at the most :|

    Knox....man..breath mate

The best thing about PC's is that dudes like Aget KNOW hw to fix things. You n me...we think we do...but there's always a cleverer dude.

I knw the feeling...it is SO demoralising AND depressing. Horrible gut dropping feeling

Hope you feel better about it later on.

Has anyone actually heard of the theory of singualrity before? It reckons that we as a race will progress to such a technological point that nothing else can be discovered and that is when the technology will take over.

Its actually quite conviencing seeing as we have advanced so much in the last 5 years in terms of technology.

I think innovation is the key here.

I here your pain loud and clear. It can be such a b*tch sometimes. I can't remember who said this but "if something don't kill you it can only make you stronger" and there's always Hexus to help fix it.

This is one of the reasons I have so many PCs, in case one of them or parts go kaput when I really need to work on one.

To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
