How to split a phone line?

...and my amusement shall be minimal to anyone who replies 'with a big knife'.

We've got the standard single phone line running into the house (with only one phone socket for the whole house, not so standard), and we've been looking at getting another one for a business line. However, we'd also like to have a seperate line for the fax machine.

Is there anyway of just ordering a single line and then splitting that between fax and phone instead of having to get two lines in? As it stands we've got a fax machine on the landline, so when we pick up the phone and it's a fax, we can manually redirect it to the machine, but this is a pain and a dedicated line would be much better.

Any ideas?

Are you on broadband? If so, would a service like THIS be any use for your purposes?

I was looking at that yesterday, and although I'd consider using VoIP for my home line, if anything goes down (net, router, exchange) you're out of business until you're back up and running....

I'll stick with landlines for the time being I think...although if the exchange is down, you're out of business either way I guess

You can get upto 6 phone lines down one cable - although you do need different sockets installed for them (as they use different pins on the cable).
