    The Royal conundrum

I can't be the only one getting out the popcorn watching the demise of Prince Andrew?

I genuinely couldn't believe he thought doing the interview was a good idea.
He might as well have painted GUILTY on the front of his forehead.

I do wonder now have the Royals expired or will Prince Charles save them, but perhaps too little too late?

This must have been one of The Queens worst years.

    Re: The Royal conundrum

I don't think Andrew is guilty.

I mean, he's guilty of being an idiot. And having very poor taste in friends. But the one person accusing him has no credibility whatsoever. Guilty of having a bad PR agency?

Obviously, Epstein didn't kill himself, and Veidt is guilty, etc.

    Re: The Royal conundrum

I'm hoping the various royal scandals and Charles lack of popularity relative to his mum will make people realise the monarchy is an outdated concept that needs scrapping. My theory being that most people who say they like the royals and the job they do really mean the current queen and aren't fussed about the rest.

For me the best thing would be to announce now that the Queen will be allowed to finish her innings and them it's scrapped. That gives time to pass laws to sort out how we run things afterwards and for the rest of the Windsor's to find an actual.job.

Watching a entitled lecher squirm under the spotlight? It's certainly a step up from "Britain's got the X factor, get me out of here".

I have no love for the royals, but they have a knack of weathering this sort thing, more's the pity.

This came up at work the other day and one of the more elderly staff members said the the queen was having another "horrible anus".

I'm not particularly a fan of the monarchy, but in my opinion the likely alternative of an American style president would be far far worse.

Maybe David Icke was correct... You know what else can't sweat? Lizards...

Or maybe they can, I don't know. You should never let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory.

Harry seems to be doing a pretty decent job lately. Grown up to be quite the dude, from what I've seen.

But as always, I think everyone should get exactly what they ask for, which means we scrap these evil entitled Royals who do nothing but scab off us British taxpayers. Take all those palaces off them and give them back to the good, honest, hard working British public. Do it. See what happens. I mean, that £12 billion portfolio is almost 6% of the NHS annual spend, so a massive chunk that would make all the difference to the ordinary, hard-working British people.....

I assume every other inch of now-outdated history and tradition the UK has will be similarly torn down and sold off, so we can (fail to) build more houses under whichever self-serving idiot government gets voted in? I assume you're all happy to lose the Royals and have Boris or Jezza be the symbols of our state? I assume you'd be happy for all those riches to be taken away from the monarchy and then snatched up by all the other ruling elite, instead of actually going to the people?

I give it five years before people are complaining that the last shreds of our cultural identity are lost, and James Bond no longer fights for queen and country, but for Amazon's corporate espionage department.

That, exactly. I mean, look at the current (US) incumbent. The only rational argument I can see for him is the alternative that was offered.

And over here .... President Blair, maybe?

Or given the single-issue support in the past for UKIP (not the current bunch, but when they actually won stuff) we could now have a President Farage. That suit you, spacein_vader?

    Thought not.

One significant advantage to the Monarchy is that there are (in modern times) carefully apolitical. No president will be.

As for the chances of 'rest' of the Windsors finding "actual jobs" I think you're forgetting the competition to get them (currently, most of them) on company boards, charity heads, etc, and of course the fact that the Queen ain't exactly short of a bob or two.

I doubt a presidency will get cheaper, either. Ask Americans the cost of Whitehouse operations, Presidential jets (yes, plural), flights of marine helicopters, armoured cars, secret service, etc. And as for taxpayers "funding" the Queen, etc, yes ..... in exchange for the Queen giving up revenue for the Crown Estates. You stop one part of that, the other part stops too. Last time I looked, the taxpayer did very well from that.

All told, though, kumagoro nailed it - sometimes, better the devil you know. If between a rock and a hard place, verify the size of the rock before choosing.

    Re: The Royal conundrum

I like the idea of a political leader that has devoted their life to the good of the country, rather than to re-election in four years.

Although a little more science education might have been good for Charles...
