A lesson learned from PeterB about dignity in adversity, so Peter, In Memorium, "Onwards and Upwards".
Partly because he was largely (apparently) unchanging - you could check in/cross paths occasionally and think, yes, NP's still there & still the same, therefore time can hardly be moving. From a selfish point of view, much more reassuring than watching other faces from your media/TV era change beyond recognition, as an unsettling mirror to yourself.
Definitely a major end of era loss. Lots of comments out there about his niceness. A good egg.

Being of a certain age, one has a certain fondness for Kirk Douglas due to his roles in Spartacus, The Vikings etc. However, what ultimately set him apart from his peers in my mind was his instrumental role in ending the "Hollywood Blacklist". So as Zak says... a Legend.
If Wisdom is the coordination of "knowledge and experience" and its deliberate use to improve well being then how come "Ignorance is bliss"
well as the son of Russian's who would have been considered "commies" even though they grafted in the US to make their place in their great nation.. he knew more than anyone how bad the Black List was. Utter respect for the man.
and one hundred and three.....
see you there Sam... we shall achieve that age together... maybe

He was a part of the Greatest Generation. A group of 'men and women fought not for fame or recognition, but because it was the "right thing to do."' They defined the modern World, because the modern World exists only because of their sacrifice.
But Richard E. Cole was more than just a war hero. He was part of history. Part of defining the way that the War was fought, and won.
One of the greatest, bravest men to have walked this earth, he volunteered for a one way mission, that acheived the first US victory of the War, and an amazing feat of aviation. Richard E. Cole was Jimmy Doolittle's co-pilot.
