More and more it seems to me that as a society/as societies we're beginning to forget a lot of important truth and lessons. In a sense, we're getting dumber as a society. I don't mean in terms of maths and literacy (although that's a different discussion) but instead truths and principles about life and human society.
What am I talking about? Well here's one of the most recent examples:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-merseyside-50824662
"A new MP has refused to apologise for tweeting that a group of Italian football fans giving fascist salutes should "get their heads kicked in".
Labour's Charlotte Nichols, who is Jewish, told the BBC: "I believe fascism should be physically confronted."
Her original comments were made in response to footage of Lazio supporters visiting Glasgow in October.
Conservative Wendy Maisey accused her of "inciting violence".
A group of Lazio fans were pictured and filmed making fascist salutes in the city before and during their side's Europa League defeat by Celtic.
On the eve of the tie, the new MP for Warrington North tweeted: "I hope every single one of them gets their heads kicked in by the good folk of Glasgow"."
I think we've seen how much various political debates have degraded over the last few years. In the USA there's been the rise of Antifa, and this MP is expressing an opinion along those same lines - the idea that violence is a legitimate response to opinions and ideas that you disagree with/are actually reprehensible.
If you're sensitive to irony (or is it tragedy?) you might point out the problem of arguing for the control of fascism by repressing the expression of ideas by the use of violence. On the other hand, one might not see any humorous side to any of this, and only lament what might seem to be a growing inability to reason and an ignorance of true principles of tolerance, respect, liberty and responsibility.
Are notions of civic duty/responsibility being lost? Or the notion of the equality of all people and the consequences of such? In an era where we might be more sensitive than ever to questions of social/personal identity and difference, are the lines of intolerable divisions being drawn elsewhere?
If so, where are these principles being lost, and where are/should such notions be taught?
And if so, what truths/lessons have we learned as a society that we should never forget and always ensure are passed down?
Thoughts Hexus?
