The PM outlined a number of measures to instill discipline and financial order to the project, including:
Appointing a dedicated minister with specific oversight and accountability for HS2
Redefining HS2 Ltd’s role so that they can give maximum focus to successfully delivering Phase 1 and 2a, and making new delivery arrangements for Euston station and the design and construction of Phase 2b, to ensure better value for money and on time delivery
Improved transparency through regular reports to Parliament from the responsible minister
After Chris Grayling how can a minister ever be trusted again to handle this kind of thing?

Decision comes alongside new investment for vital local transport links as PM sets out his vision to overhaul the UK’s transport network, including £5 billion to improve bus and cycle links outside London, as well as vital upgrades to local roads
Bozo has vision beyond the end of his nose? Isn't this what everyone has been saying for years or this just added to sweeten the pie for those against HS2 who will not benefit from it?
I agree we do need engineering projects, the last few of interest I can remember were the angel of the north, the millennium wheel and the dome none of which really impressed. 20 years ago.

Don't forget the Queensferry Crossing in Scotland :) On time and under budget.
Re: Should HS2 proceed : Yes or No?
and anyone who thought a certain overseas nation wasn't involved might want to see this:

some might say it's the first bit of propaganda trying to justify why they will, just as quickly as they feel they can get away with it, hand over the keys to them, and probably seek to alter/stymmie people's power and ability to object and be properly compensated.
Obviously this hasn't been pre-planned in any way and came completely out of the blue and no-one at all is in their pockets. Not at all.

unlike the Edinburgh trams which were massively late, massively over-budget, incomplete (the route never got fully built) and an absolute political shambles.

My comments were in the context of those that think HS2 is a good way of spending money. Surely if you think it's good value for money then it doesn't matter how the numbers are presented. However if I see any supporters of HS2 ever moaning about excessive tax, services being cut back or anything else they would like to see money spent on that isn't, I'll happily point them to one of the reasons for it.

Nice bridge, how did that success story slip under my skeptical radar?
on a side note the £5bn to improve bus and cycle links outside London is actually over 5 years - still not taking us past pre-austerity levels.

How do Chinese trains run?

Fast. Really, really fast.
For a safety record, the Chinese government assures me they totally didn't crash one in 2011...
The Japanese have the best train system I've ever experienced. But they don't build things quickly like the Chinese. They started building the Chūō Shinkansen a new Maglev to run from Tokyo to Osaka in 2014, with a planned completion date in 2045.
Re: Should HS2 proceed : Yes or No?
The Chinese have a vast amount of experience at building HSR, they're just not great at generating enough money even to finance the interest payments on the debt let alone the debt itself.

building something quickly isn't always a good thing, if it means corners get cut etc...

No idea what you might be thinking of. 23 minutes to build a monorail?

Not now, maybe in the future. We have more imporatant places to be using the money and resources at present.
