Can anyone explain why this is a thing? Hand sanitiser I understand I guess, but toilet roll?

People are obviously pooing themselves.
Well, places are running out of toilet paper due to hoarding, so best stock up when you can!

Can't help but think it's exaggerated by the media, there was toilet roll in the supermarkets i went in during the last week.
That being said, if your told by media outlets that people are hording it. And there's a small handfull of examples shown (without wider context)
Then it's only going to encourage everyone to buy it, whether it was a 'thing' amougnst the wider population or not to begin with.
Agree AC81, even I was thinking I don't really need anymore toilet roll but what if when I do need some, maybe I should get some now just in case.
My local Tesco which actually has toilet roll left is restricting the amount you can buy, a sensible precaution, they are doing the same for handwash and bleach !

People are obviously taking care of both ends, so hand sanitizers for hands and face and toilet paper for the the other end.
The pricing seems to have increased as a result.
Until recently, a 24-pack of Asda Shades brand toilet roll was £7.50 as a Rollback (previously £8 normally). Now it's £9 (although that change hasn't been reflected on the Asda website, as it's still showing as £7.50 there).
EDIT: There's a possibility I could be mistaken and a shelf label was misread as belonging to that brand and it scanned in at its online advertised price after all though.
It honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was a case of a few small instances of panic buying that were reported on by the media, prompting more widespread ones as a result.

Fact: Corona virus makes your arse explode.
On a slightly more serious note, I just finished the weekly shopping trip. It ain't just toilet roll in short supply - All the pasta shelves were empty, and half the rice shelves too. A lot of tinned goods weren't as abundant as usual either.
The DIY section looked ok, so the crazies haven't started building back garden bunkers yet.
Yet.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
With the hand sanitiser selling out; the cheap vodka may be next.
Apparently, factories making toilet tolls have diverged their resources from making toilet papers to making face masks, resulting some diminished supplies, probably made worse by the panic buying.
I am surprised that this issue has gone all the way to the UK though (never checked where toilet papers are made - is China also the main manufacturers of toilet rolls worldwide - because part of the country might be struggling to function properly at the moment).
with a decline in retail takings due to brexit, fear stories in the media leading to panic buying helps boost sales in stores. it's almost like it's planned
i wonder what those who already stockpiled for brexitageddon are doing
as long as they don't run out of chocolate and wine i'll be fine
Just come back from a super market..
They'd parked a fresh pallet full of toilet rolls at the end of the aisle where they normally reside. Only, it was still shrink wrapped and full, and the shelves were still 2/3rds full.
This certainly isn't as 'rampant' as the media is making out.
Didn't see anyone with more than one packet of loo rolls either.
That's the trouble with social media and 24 hour news outlets in this day we live in. So much gets reported without further context.
Will say also, although the pasta shelves had taken a hit. They were only about 1/3 full. The shelves for pasta sauses/pesto were comepletly full.
So, there might also be a case that much of the 'panic buying' is from opportunists that are actually looking to sell these on for a profit, rather than genuinly concerned members of the public. (just my theory though at the moment ;-) )
Unless there's a new fashion for eating bland unflavoured pasta i'm unaware of anyway???
Wouldn't mind betting boot fairs and ebay will be full of pasta and toilet roll at inflated prices. Without much luck round here though, as they're still both very much available. (in Kent btw)

I think that's exactly what's happened. It's ridiculous, and the media have a lot to answer for WRT spreading unwarranted panic.
A few places seem to be doing the right thing regarding price gouging though; apparently ebay have banned the sale of such items, and I seem to recall reading earlier today, that shops could be prosecuted for hiking prices as a result of panic buying. Short-term rations are IMO a sensible albeit imperfect way of maintaining a supply of goods when some people are incapable of being rational themselves.
