positive ideas to use extra time at this current moment when pubs etc are closed
obviously there's a lot of bad things going on at the moment, so wondering about positive aspects of the current situation. whilst working from home, you have that added time that would otherwise be spent commuting. pubs, clubs, gyms, cinemas all sorts of things are closed, so you can't spend your time there, and you are supposed to avoid social contact
a lot of people may initially at least turn to netflix and not the most healthy of options initially, but as time goes on, cabin fever may kick in more. so i was wondering what ideas people had to use the extra time in a positive way
for example, that thing that shirts are hanging on in the spare room that you were going to use to get fit, is anyone going to start using the keep fit bike or gear that was used for the first week and you gave up on? and if you do, are you normally an active gym goer, or turning to this because you aren't getting that little bit of activity by walking to the bus/train/shops etc?
or are you going to learn to play that guitar lying around? or learn something else new and useful, and if so what, and how are you going to learn it? youtube/internet? learn photoshop or SQL or study for a qualification?
instead of sitting getting fatter and drinking more, with the food situation, maybe you plan to lose a bit weight, maybe drink less or give up drinking, or go veggie or vegan instead of pigging out on pizza and coke?
and how will you keep in touch with friends? will you plan to meet them somewhere, and do something, if so what activities? what about dating? i saw on the bbc news site someone having a date over webcam. how will single people try and meet someone if pubs, clubs, cafes and restaurants and cinemas are closed? go for a walk in the park?
i try to see things in that for everything bad, there's usually some kind of flip side where someone benefits in some way even the worst of things, even if most people suffer. and if people have good ideas and share them then others can maybe benefit too
as food runs out and is harder to get, i'll turn to the things in the cupboard i bought cheap as backup food, and as the good food gets scare and wine and booze gets scarce or more expensive i'll drink and eat less and try and lose weight and get fitter. may turn to the excersize bike too. but it will take a few days of getting used to the situation and shaking off old habits to get there. right now i'm pigging out on netflix and catching up with tv shows etc as there's been a deluge of them, but once that's out the way i'll get around to reading some of the piles of books i've bought and never played, and start using my turntables again and play some of the mountains of vinyl i've bought (i've been buying records since before CDs and never stopped). i've been overloaded with work the past couple of years so this will be my chance to try and catch up on life a bit with the extra time. i spend about 3 full days a month commuting normally. when you consider you sleep for 8 hours a night, that's a lot of extra time back in my hands right there. it's like having an extra week of awake time to do things. plus it's easier to clean and do laundry and stuff in between working from home

Avoid contact doesn't mean no communication. Many of us communicate through whatsapp or telegram. So don't isolate complete, pick up phone and just ask how your close ones are doing.

Actually been in more contact with friends now (we're super around the country now) as everyone is missing the day to day contact. Catch up and virtual board/video games seems to be coming a daily thing in an evening :)
Re: positive ideas to use extra time at this current moment when pubs etc are closed
I am taking the approach of part social part hobby so a few calls/skype/facetime/etc, and a few evenings where it's play an instrument/learn a language/read a book/rewire my guitar/edit the holiday photos I still haven't got around to doing etc.
also remember to exercise. Circuits of push-ups, sit-ups, squats, lunges, running on the spot, crunches, side steps, shadow boxing, and if you have them weights/resistance bands will go a long way to keeping you healthy (and sane). Do them first thing in morning or evening depending on what works, then jump straight in the shower (cold water) before letting it warm up and having your usual shower.
I'm also trying to find humour where I can and stay positive rather than dwelling on the negative or unknowns. Not easy, and not perfect, but it is important to remember to keep your head above water so to speak.

My usual gym has hired out their portable equipment (kettlebells and the like) and are moving their lessons to videoconferences so people can follow along at home

What extra time? I haven't found any:crazy::surprised:

i guess it depends if you usually commute. Plenty of time saved there if you have a 1.5 hour journey each way

^ This.
I'm even busier because I'm WFH on cack internet, so everything takes longer, as well as 'being home', which is a wife-trigger for "I have all these extra little jobs for you to do around the house".
I'm tempted to go do SAS Selection again and take the dogs with me this time - They'd love the long walks and I'd get some peace!!

I know the feeling. My wife is like " we can do all that DIY we were going to pay someone to do..." the reason we were going to pay them was because we had no time with full time jobs that we still have and are expected to do as WFH. In fairness I think she means in the evenings, but I haven't had one yet where I haven't worked until gone midnight so far
Re: positive ideas to use extra time at this current moment when pubs etc are closed
If your wives want you to do DIY,in this era of equality they should also help with the work too.

Also I forget to add - its probably best to avoid as much social media as you can during this crisis. Reading twitter and some of the other forums, there is a percentage of people, not even affected by the crisis, but its almost like they are waiting for the end of days. There are those OTH affected by the crisis who appear to be far more positive. I really don't understand social media at times. People are even hoarding live chickens. You cannot make this stuff up.

No rice either, so no saki. Heck, I can't even buy stuff to make bread.

You clearly haven't seen the chaos my wife can create with a brush :D
Edit: Upsides? The cupboard is having a bit of a purge of old food that would probably have been discarded, and the walk to the supermarket today was quite nice. Would have been better if they had decent sized bottles of milk. Or rice, pasta, bread... there was a reason we didn't bother taking the car.

Sugar has been fine in our local shop. No flour though, and try buying a bread-maker online!
On the DIY front, our plastered cancelled on us due to asthma so I have the fun job at some point of breaking off all the old damp stuff and having bare brick for a while until things go back to normal. And was going to get someone it to sort the fence posts out properly after the last storm destroyed my previous bodge job - looks like I'll be doing this as well!
