    What's your earliest 'significant' memory?

By 'significant', I mean of events the rest of us can relate to. This was prmpted by the "50 years ago" thread ....https://forums.hexus.net/general-dis...ago-today.html

In my case, I remember the background worries over MAD and nuclear annihilation, but the first crystal clear memory wss JFK's assassination .... even if I didn't fully comprehend the significance.

Re: What's your earliest 'significant' memory?

A visit to relations on the Isle of Wight, getting the coloured sands poured into a test tube, parents confirmed I was about 18months old !

Just reread the OP, sorry, my first significant memory is also JFK.
    Cheers, David

Nasa's Viking lander reaching Mars: 1976.
OFC the summer of 76 was generally quite memorable, though I got chicken pox and spent some time in isolation. Some things don't change

I remember challenger going bang when I was in school, if that’s what you mean..

What I don’t remember is in 1979, when we were camping in the south of France, I went missing for hours only to be found in a tent with 2 topless Swedish girl’s, that, that I don’t remember...

Re: What's your earliest 'significant' memory?

This is interesting. I know of events that I was around for and could have been aware of, but I suppose I wasn't paying attention to the news at that age.
The first event that came to mind was Diana's death - because I remember being awake at night watching TV and the channels were interrupted. But I didn't think that could be the only thing I remembered. So I've just had a quick scan for major events that should have been memorable for me around the mid to late 80's.

I can definitely remember watching news coverage of the following although I wasn't really aware of the scale/impact of them:

    Exxon Valdez disaster
Saddam Hussein and the Iraq War
Gorbachev was on the news a lot, that birthmark was obviously memorable, but I don't think I was aware of a specific event to tie him in with.

The famine in Ethiopia started during the mid-80's, and I remember that being a major issue, although the coverage and idea about it likely continued on afterwards, so I'm not sure when it entered my mind.

What was the very first event? I'm really not sure. (Sorry!) I will say that most of my memories are tied to TV coverage. For some years we didn't have a TV so that will have played into it. I'm not sure when we got our first B&W TV. As for newspapers I think my Dad used to subscribe to the Sunday Times, but I don't think we received a daily. And I don't recall us tuning into the radio much.

Like g8ina I can remember some really early stuff but of significance? Zeebrugger ferry disaster I guess. That or Challenger Shuttle disaster, whichever it was came first.

Re: What's your earliest 'significant' memory?

earliest that everyone else knows about would be 9/11. was watching wheel of fortune with john leslie, theyd jujst spun the wheel for a bonus, then the show cut to the 2nd plane.
have vague memories of berlin wall, gary linaker crying and beckham kicking someone, no idea wshen they happened though.

earliest memory involving someone everyone else has heard of. i was 4 years old, southport hospital was being opened by prince charles, it was a hot day and all the schools were there to clap at stuff. just walked a mile or so, was feeling queasy just as charles was going past, managed to keep mouth shut just long enough, then was sick in bush a few seconds later.

Re: What's your earliest 'significant' memory?

Being pinned against a fence by a vicious dog when I was about three years old.

I remember my mum running up the garden shouting at the dog and throwing a lump of coal at it - her shout startled the dog and it moved just in time for the lump of coal skim past it and hit me square on the shin.

Oh, not a personal memory... umm.. Probably Arthur Ashe winning Wimbledon in the (late?) seventies - and the death of Elvis.

Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!
