Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

As per the title, I am struggling to get to the bottom of a mysterious dropping I am experiencing.

Ill be using the laptop, and suddenly I will lose everything connected to the internet. My WIFI signal is still there, but clicking on the WIFI signal, networking then fails to load. If I go to my computer, networking still doesn't load. if I disable internet, via my keyboard hard button, then enable it again. It fails to locate any networks.

I have to do restart, before it works as normal again.

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? It seems impossible to pinpoint, but it's especially killing me in online games as random disconnects = instant lose!

did this start in the last 24 hours by any chance? If so it might be external rather than internal. see here: https://forums.hexus.net/networking-...gone-cack.html

Re: Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

What router and ISP do you have?
How long has this been going on for?

Have you tried restarting the router to see if that brings it back to life, instead of restarting laptop?

Do any other WIFI devices experience the same problem, phone, tablet etc...

Re: Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

I fear this is localised to my laptop, its a new router from a few weeks ago (mid-high end TP-Link), but it shows a constant connection throughout. I also have an Alexa next to me, so when my game drops/connection issues come up I always check via Alexa to see if it is me that will drop vs someone else in the game room). Sometimes I also have youtube on the go.

This means it is my Laptop doing something odd. When it happened last, when I restarted the PC it spent about 10 seconds 'updating' during boot up, so I wonder if it could be a Windows Update thing? Previous drop I don't remember this Update being apparent though.

Re: Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

worth downloading a wifi app to your phone for a few days and see if it keeps signal while the lappy loses it.

might be the router sender unit messing about.... and if so the phone will lose signal too.

Re: Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

what is the chip in the router? Is is a puma chipset by any chance? If so I'd set up a thinkbroadband monitoring of your connection latency. You might be surprised at what you see.

Re: Loosing Internet connection 'behind the scenes'

I've seen various similar problems, causes & solutions

    Top 2 though have been:

    1) Issue at the ISP end, usually DNS problems but can be connectivity (especially if you are with a bottom feeder ISP like TalkTalk)
    2) Router issue, usually being overloaded where it can't keep up with wifi & broadband

Most recently, I had major issues with Skys DNS being shockingly bad (Constantly falling over) and then hit problem 2 where the wifi was rubbish...full signal but no, or very slow, internet.

I fixed both by putting in a "pihole" to act as a local DNS server (which handily also gives me a DNS based ad-blocker ) and by turning off my router's wifi and swapping to a cheap Tenda mesh system. My router then ran cold too - it's amazing just how much heat they generate by running wifi.

Since then, rock solid connection. My sky router needed a bit of firmware hacking to deal with their horrible DNS approach (although their transparent DNS did still cause a few problems, albeit not as bad) but it worked. I've since switched ISP but i'm still running the same setup.

The above may not be your issue but worth a look - I recommend a pihole anyway as it's a brilliant use of a pi-zero-w
