    The name you go by

Just a bit of fun, but where do your monikers on here come from?

    I'm Helios451

Helios as in the Greek for the Sun - because all our existence and power comes, one way or another, from our Sun or other suns throughout the history of the Universe (exposes my love of astronomy).

451 as in the temperature in Fahrenheit at which paper spontaneously burst into flame - linking with the power of the Sun, but also informed by my love of Science Fiction.

Re: The name you go by

For me, it goes back to my very first online game of Team Fortress Classic in 1999.

I remember going round to a friend's house as he had just had ISDN installed, and we were so excited to get online with a ping of less than 150ms and play some games. My mates last name was "Turnbull" and often was called "turnip", so we ended up with variations of vegetables - Turnip, Spud and Cabbage (his brother). I was just "spud" then, but a year or so later I signed up to "Planetarion" and "spud" was taken, so I became "Spud1" and it stuck ever since.

I still remember the silky smooth ISDN connection and how big of a jump it was...not having to lead your sniper shots by an inch was a game changer

G8INA is my radio ham callsign, has been since 1973.

Tangram (one of my other online personas) is from 1981 when I was working in Saudi, all I listened to day and night was Tangram by Tangerine Dream, used to drive my roomies mad

Another time, another forum, where someone who knew me personally and had been under my command at one stage decided to get me renamed.
I have yet to actually change my name to HardcoreTory, though, and probably won't until I actually do vote for them.

I just wanted something as short as possible, easy to remember, and as close to tech-related as possible. I was thinking of 'I/O' (Input/Output) with this one.

I've never seen it, nor do I plan to, but I was aware of its title so liked your play on the name.

Re: The name you go by

Early teenage years, stronger grip than most of my peers due to the work I was helping my dad with. Funny enough I always started a handshake soft and adjusted the force to match but when some people started to squeeze as hard as they could, because reasons, I just squeezed back.

This eventually became a nickname, given me by those able to speak English (which I was not back then) and stayed with me when going to LAN parties and/or playing online.

Re: The name you go by

Another gaming origin here. Back over in Tucson, Arizona, some friends were throwing a Halo party - original Halo, on Xbox, networked locally. I needed to come up with a player name (because you can't just use your actual name, right?), and Gallant is what I came up with. I don't remember what inspired it. I did, however, misspell it.
