Proposals to prevent foreign control of NHS voted down

Looks like MPs have voted down proposals which would have prevented foreign control of the NHS:
    https://twitter.com/HouseofCommons/s...trade-deals%2F

MPs have voted against New Clause 17, with 340 votes to 251.

The New Clause intended to protect the NHS and publicly funded health and care services in other parts of the UK from any form of control from outside the UK.

At the same time, they also voted down, proposals to maintain standards on imported food.

MPs have voted against New Clause 11, with 337 votes to 251.

The New Clause relates to imported agricultural goods.

Re: Proposals to prevent foreign control of NHS voted down

These being voted down doesn't exactly inspire confidence in the government's assertions that the NHS won't be for sale and that they won't lower food standards.

    Quite the opposite in fact.

yup I'm going to say it. Told you so. I could see this coming a mile off. Better off after Brexit my backside. If ever you wanted proof the tories want to sell us out look at the voting behaviour - this speaks volumes. Yet again had a certain Mr C not agreed to an election that lost the opposition so many seats we could at least have had a brexit where these kind of protections were forced through parliament.

Didn't they also vote down something that would've given parliament a say over the trade deals they bring back?

I can get on board with Parliament being sovereign if they agree to exercise that right.

Re: Proposals to prevent foreign control of NHS voted down

I was reading though some of the discussion on this elsewhere and I was not aware of this document from last year:
    https://ustr.gov/sites/default/files...Objectives.pdf

Look on pages 8 and 9,and now tie what has happened into that.

That is part of the official documents on the US side regarding a trade deal,SOEs(State Owned Enterprises such as the NHS) can't hurt the domestic industry of the US. We tend to buy generics from places like India, which are far cheaper. Also the collective bargaining power of NHS purchasing is used to push drug prices down from US companies, but looking at that, the wording is so broad, that could be defined as affecting their companies in a negative way.

The issue is if this is allowed, guess what?? Every other country will ask for similar things too.

    Under Cameron & Osborne
    HS2 > Chinese.
    Hinkley > Chinese
Newspapers: The Independent and The evening standard > russian oligarchs.
They were trying to flog off Land registry because it was making money and run well.

Yes, but I'm not quite sure what the point is - obviously he wasn't editor when he was in government. Then he was, and now he isn't. Doesn't seem relevant to the 'under Cameron & Osbourne' heading. Lots of ex MPs have had jobs since leaving government
