Re: Legal Online Image Use
Might be answering my own question here...
This webpage's guide suggests that using tools like Creative Commons etc. is a way to find images and know their associated rights:
https://www.searchenginejournal.com/.../319403/#close
Creative Commons seems like a convenient way to search for usable images, but in the 'About' page it says this:
"Please note that CC does not verify whether the images are properly CC licensed, or whether the attribution and other licensing information we have aggregated is accurate or complete. Please independently verify the licensing status and attribution information before reusing the content."
So...back to square one?

I *think* copyright would rest with who took the photo of the painting (or whoever they transferred it to), rather than the painter. You can ask the owner of the webpage that is hosting the image where they got it from etc. to eventually traceback to the person who uploaded it first (good luck) and see if they got permission from the photographer and under what license.

Your best bet is to join something like Adobe Stock, you can get it for a months free trial and get 10 images for free. They can be used for any use pretty much unless they say otherwise and generally the image quality and resolution is better.

Thanks. That's helpful. It sounds like work though...

I've just had a look and I think I might be able to work with this. Thanks for the recommendation!

Re: Legal Online Image Use
Depending on how much time you have, this is a nice use case for Fiverr.com
I use them quite a bit for graphics work, if you can find someone on there you trust - I can often send them a few images I find on google and they will then come back with either original or licenced images that I can use. There area couple of vendors on there I have worked with many many times for artwork & photos, generally do a good job...but you get what you pay for on there in general.
Amazing site for this kind of thing, or anything creative really.
Adobe's service is also excellent (tho more manual) as is shutterstock.
Re: Legal Online Image Use
It's safest to just use free images from stock photo sites. Using an image from Google without the proper licensing can get you into serious trouble.
