Shelby Supercars Tuatara smashes Bugatti Chiron's speed record

BBC Top Gear posted this video today, of Shelby's new Tuatara supercar absolutely blitzing the 305mph record set by the Chiron Super Sport in 2019.

Apparently a documentary is being made about the new car and record attempt and, until then, this footage given to Top Gear is the only publicly available footage.

The Tuatara managed an average over two runs of 316mph, including a top speed of 331mph on the second run, thanks to its 1750bhp engine. Those numbers are just crazy for a road-legal production car.

What's also striking is that the speed was still climbing when the driver (Oliver Webb) backs off before he runs out of road. I'd love to see what it really maxes out at given a longer stretch of road than the 7 miles used here.

Re: Shelby Supercars Tuatara smashes Bugatti Chiron's speed record

I mean it’s interesting as a concept, but I’ve had a go in a lambo convertible on a track and even that would be completely impractical as an every day car. There’s no way you could drive it at anything approaching normal speeds on normal roads, it was just begging to go faster the whole time.....

Re: Shelby Supercars Tuatara smashes Bugatti Chiron's speed record

Yeah I noticed that the Tuatara has a 6 litre twin-turbo V8, compared to the Chiron's 8 litre quad-turbo W16, yet still develops more power (1,750bhp with ethanol fuel). Even 'just' 1,350bhp from 91 octane fuel is mightily impressive from the Shelby.

I can't help but feel this car won't get some of the recognition it deserves because it's American, or because it's cheaper and less complex than the Chiron. For me, that makes its achievements all the more impressive.

I was also surprised (and a little disappointed) to read in that link that Jarrod Shelby isn't related to Carroll Shelby. I just assumed Jarrod must be his son or something. Not that it really matters, other than because Shelby Cobras and Shelby Mustangs are two of my favourite muscle cars

All that tech and they end up bodging a resistor in the wire from an exhaust sensor to get temps down

Sounds to me more like using a resistor as an extra discharge path in the coil packs. So I guess that is a bug in the ECU drive electronics, as I can't imagine any resistor lasting long on the spark side of the coil

Well the video is pretty clearly not the 331mph run, it might not even be the slower leg of the record breaking run. It's more like a reconstruction run for the cameras where the driver is faking celebration rather than ruining his trousers as the car nearly gets blown off the road.

Re: Shelby Supercars Tuatara smashes Bugatti Chiron's speed record

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been updated yet.

TL;DR - the "record breaking" video showed the car doing 240 MPH.

Any data that could have backed up their claims they had actually done it is being witheld. Such as GPS logs and vehicle data logs. This data mysteriously hasn't been kept despite it being related to a world record attempt.

Engineering explained does a detailed analysis here.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jqCdBKl0ME

There are only two realistically possible explanations.

    Wilful deception or:
Utter, utter incompetence by many different people at SSC and possibly the Video editing company.

In light of the more recent revelations, does that now make more sense? There is an international distrust of American automotive claims as the industry there tends to be full of "inaccurate claims"*

But apparently they are going to redo the run, and some exhaust bloke said it was doing the speed it said so who knows.
