Looking for a watch for under 1k

    Hi Everybody,

For the past few years I've been using a Garmin Fenix 3 as my daily watch. It`s a great watch but after doing a couple of Website's at work relating to horology I`ve got a bit of an itch to buy a normal non smart watch again

The problem is I`m a bit clueless as to what brands are good in my range.

I like the look of the Hamilton Khaki range (king and field watches) But I was wondering what else is out there and what peoples opinions are?

I've been looking into similar, and it of course depends what you're after. I've been looking at automatic watches, and in that price range you're almost always getting the same movement - Sellita - with the model depending on whether you've got additional dials etc. So underneath they're pretty similar. I think some of the Christopher Ward watches are absolutely beautiful, but they do use the cheapest of the Sellita movements most of the time and, as a friend confirmed who has one, suffer from accuracy quite badly as a result. But as something pretty to wear they look good.

I have a Citizen Promaster Ecodrive which has lasted 15 years so far on its original capacitor/battery. Automatics are great but do realistically need servicing on them every few years,so make sure you factor that into total lifespan costs.

wow different world. I consider £100 too expensive... I've got a cheapo casio you can have for £950 seeing as it's black friday almost.

Just my opinion, as requested... but I think you've already started on the better track with your approach to those Hamiltons.
In order to avoid becoming an insufferable watch snob, who ends up criticising my preference for Casio (and a couple of Seiko) digital watches, I think the trick is to look around and just find watches you like, before then informing your choice by eliminating those that aren't good enough for your requirements.

A brand name does not decide how 'good' a watch is, any more than it defines how good it looks to your own eyes. There are watches out there from big brand names that cost an absolute bomb, but I don't think you could pay me enough to ever wear such god-awfully hideous jewellery.
Rolex is always the first brand name that people seem to bring up, but they're not always as good as people expect.

By contrast, I own a Randy. It's a relatively cheap make, but of WW2 vintage and the exact brand favoured by many of the American soldiers with whom I have some affiliation, and so I have a real thing for those.... and the name is a constant source of amusement!

Similarly, I quite like some of the CWC official British military issue ones (the G10 is a classic from my time), and if you liked the Hamiltons* then I imagine you'll like the CWCs.

*Technically the new ones are nothing more than a bargain basement brand owned by Swatch Group, but that's just watch-snob talk...!

High end Seiko's are very good or maybe look at Oris come sale time, there should be a couple that fit your budget.

Re: Looking for a watch for under 1k

    Hey Guys,

    Thanks for all the advice

I ended up ordering one of these : https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-gb/...date-auto.html

I thought the colour of the face markings was a bit different from the intersellar version. The strap is ok although i'd have prefered a non embossed version but over all I am really happy with it.

The best part is that when I was looking I found it on Ernest jones for less than 500
