Nationalised Internet and Computer Provision incoming?

I haven't seen anyone talking about this but consider the COVID situation with education and how the answer was education at home online, that obviously excludes children with no internet/adequate internet, or computer device.

That being the case, do you think that down the line this will lead to a push for either nationalising the internet and the government required to provide computing equipment to those who can't afford it?

What implications might that have for support for those people, and also upgrades of those machines, and replacements in case of damage etc.?

What sort of push might be incoming to improve infrastructure?

Or will it be a case of government paying 3rd parties to make this provision?

    What do you think, Hexus?

Absolutely it will be some Tory friends, much like everything else Covid related.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

tbh we should have a NFP government funded (via taxes) internet infrastructure provider, but not government run - a private NFP whose sole mandate is not profit but investment in infrastructure now and long-term with longterm strategy etc. Same goes for power generation. Openreach is abyssmal and the private market just aren't doing a good enough job at reaching rural areas. Objections will come if state provided about state snooping etc. Given the snoopers' charter that is kind of irrelevant now anyway, so defund BT and strip them of openreach and set up something to get fttp to every house end-of. Don't give taxes to Virgin et al, get something out there who can grab the bull by the horns and get on with it.

While they're at it the gov should immediately act to stop incessant price hikes during contracts and which are routinely far above inflation /cpi which is what they said the companies said they needed. It's BS.

Re: Nationalised Internet and Computer Provision incoming?

I think it would be effectively impossible to squeeze the large media companies such as virgin and sky into the small window of just being better than the baseline packages that are good enough. Most of them rely on selling overkill packages "Because its just a few pounds more for yx as much", or by just being the only option available in the area.

I do think internet access and computing equipment is becoming more of a need/right than want in modern society though. Not because you absolutely require one, but because things such as searching for jobs absolutely require it. I think perhaps giving free cheap android phones or something for those below a certain income could actually be somewhat viable when it comes to allowing people to do basics. Though then the theory of openreach would also be nice, except executed in a way that didnt lead to the disaster that openreach is.

Tl:dr It'd be really nice for society to have baseline internet/computing needs supplied by the government, wont happen. At least internet wise.
