It's not at all a bad idea in terms of practicality for the end user but with the proviso that it would most likely need a transformer brick that it doesn't make sense to include in the gpu itself, but more importantly, it bypasses the psu makers who wouldn't be happy, and they work together enough that they wouldn't do that to their partners.
Other than getting support for that daft 12 pin power connector, I wouldn't have thought nvidia would really care about keeping PSU manufacturers happy.
Would be neat to get a standardised external power input for GPUs, they can revert to using PCIE bus power for desktop and non-demanding tasks, then plug in for gaming/compute - great solution for laptops as well.

I know... but occasionally they take these jokes and actually make them into real products. So in the event that they're considering it and just happen to see this thread, I am submitting my post as a volunteer to test-fit any free samples they might care to offer!
