Stuff I neither want nor need

This exemplifies the problem with Microsoft and Windows 10. I go into settings now, and they have shifted it around. At the top, taking up 2/5ths of the space, is "Windows update", "Rewards (start earning)" and "Web Browsing (restore recommended)".

The three things which I don't want, need and wish would generally get out of my way are:
    1) windows "let's see what we can break today" update
    2) stupid rewards programs - I'm trying to write a letter, not accrue airmiles or nectar points
    3) EDGE AND BING

So thanks, MS for putting those things so front and centre I had to enlarge the window to see the rest of the stuff.

It's a friggin' joke. I only found out yesterday that shutting down your PC doesn't shut it down. It closes all your windows and hibernates the kernel. Thus giving you all the inconvenience of shutting down but with none of the advantages of starting afresh next time. Clicking "restart" actually restarts the kernel, because MS think people will do that if they have problems. HOW ABOUT GIVING US THE CHOICE AND NOT BURYING IT IN MENUS? This is all to save a few seconds on HDD systems and maybe 1 or 2 seconds on SSD systems. Without knowledge of this behaviour, diagnosing problems can go down all kinds of wacky routes where a true power cycle would resolve the issue.

This particular PC was turned on an hour ago and is showing an uptime in task manager of over 25 hours.

    Grumpy.

Re: Stuff I neither want nor need

The Settings page has been like that for a while now. Not sure what you mean about shut down - my shut down does a full shut down and power off. You can enable 'fast start' if you want it to just hibernate or whatever, but I have never enabled that so it doesn't. You can change that under power and sleep settings (or used to be able to, I can't see it now...possibly because I also turned off hibernation)

Re: Stuff I neither want nor need

What version of Windows 10 is it? I don't have any of those things in settings and when I shut my computer down, it shuts down, up time says 4 hours 45 minutes which is correct.

I too have hibernate and fast startup turned off

You can hold down SHIFT as you select Shut Down if you want a full, proper shutdown. I try to rationalise this by looking at it like Delete vs. SHIFT-Delete for deleting files.

I can confirm that I too had to disable Fast Startup myself at the time, as it was already enabled by default.

Don't remember running into this problem, but then I think I disabled that ages ago, so it must have kept over various feature updates.

Good to know *some* setting don't get reset with feature updates, as losing settings with feature updates is a major irritation.

If I recall correctly, it was one of the things I saw mentioned about Win10 when preparing for the upgrade from Win7 at the start of last year, so it was something I made sure to disable as soon as possible.

I have checked the setting after feature updates too, and can confirm that thus far it hasn't been re-enabled for me either.

I think it's more about the RAM and kernel state being stored somewhere for faster access, instead of being reset like in a 'true' shutdown, or something...
I dunno. I watched the vid and understood the concepts, but not enough to explain any part of it precisely.

I agree with you on all these things. Fast startup is a horrible feature. I have seen over 200days uptime on multiple machines. I have seen so many issues caused by fast start up. Wifi card disappearing, antivirus not updating, group policy not applying. general application issues. this is just a small list of issues I have seen and fixed by forcing a full shutdown by holding down shift and shutting down.

Fast startup is the first thing I turn off on my machine as well as for friends and family. With an SSD fast start up doesn't really save anytime. It was only somewhat useful on windows 8 if using a hard drive.

I also remember when Windows 10 first came out the hoohaa about it. I'm not sure what it is like though as I hate hibernation and the first thing I do is fire up the old CMD and do powercfg -h off

Re: Stuff I neither want nor need

Initially, I didn't change settings, and didn't mind it hibernating. I knew it was hibernating rather than shut down, because of the debug code on the motherboard when I switched on the PC (I have a see through case). But about 6 months in, hibernating caused me problems. I kept noticing that youtube videos were out of sync with the audio. HOWEVER, if I restart again, the videos were in sync. This got annoying. So I worked out how to turn off hibernating/sleep. That problem disappeared. Not looked back since.

They should just stop with having sleep. As most PC's on an SSD can boot from cold in less than 20secs.

Edit: I also turned off a ton of "features" and telemetry stuff in Win 10. My Windows probably doesn't look anything like the standard build anymore. It's funny when I see some other's screen on things like youtube vids, that we both use the same OS!

I've also got into the habit of checking my settings after a Windows Update... as MS have a tendency to turn on some settings I've switched off. Noticed it a few times over the years.
