This exemplifies the problem with Microsoft and Windows 10. I go into settings now, and they have shifted it around. At the top, taking up 2/5ths of the space, is "Windows update", "Rewards (start earning)" and "Web Browsing (restore recommended)".
The three things which I don't want, need and wish would generally get out of my way are:
1) windows "let's see what we can break today" update
2) stupid rewards programs - I'm trying to write a letter, not accrue airmiles or nectar points
3) EDGE AND BING
So thanks, MS for putting those things so front and centre I had to enlarge the window to see the rest of the stuff.
It's a friggin' joke. I only found out yesterday that shutting down your PC doesn't shut it down. It closes all your windows and hibernates the kernel. Thus giving you all the inconvenience of shutting down but with none of the advantages of starting afresh next time. Clicking "restart" actually restarts the kernel, because MS think people will do that if they have problems. HOW ABOUT GIVING US THE CHOICE AND NOT BURYING IT IN MENUS? This is all to save a few seconds on HDD systems and maybe 1 or 2 seconds on SSD systems. Without knowledge of this behaviour, diagnosing problems can go down all kinds of wacky routes where a true power cycle would resolve the issue.
This particular PC was turned on an hour ago and is showing an uptime in task manager of over 25 hours.
Grumpy.
