eBay Sellers fees are now.... painful

Recently I have sold some stuff on the Bay and not done too badly. There's still loads of scammers, con artists and liars who claim items dont arrive but.....that aside.... i got rid of some stuff

They have now split entirely from Paypal, and to sell you need to set up banking details direct, and they pay direct to your bank (minus fees) on every transaction, not as a monthly bill

And... it's now 12.8% of sales AND postage fees plus 30p

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/...ellers?id=4822

    12.8%

    stings...

    you've been warnedd

Well at least you're not selling an app!

I guess it was stuff worth posting. Definitely adds to the appeal of CEX or similar for tech stuff. Haven't sold normal stuff on eBay for a long time now, had a car up on the classifieds year and a half ago and had the usual dreamers but did find a proper buyer after a while.

Does everyone pay that or just the little people? I guess Amazon charge more or your wouldn't get all the random stores on eBay.

I haven't signed up for it yet so still on the old system. Not too keen on the way they make their payments, you don't have control of when you get paid, they just pay you every 2 or 3 days or whatever.

I never sold loads on ebay anyway but I won't be changing to the new system

Re: eBay Sellers fees are now.... painful

I have had success with Gumtree recently, even with people willing to pay in advance and wait for postage. I haven't ever really used ebay for sales but this puts me off even more. The stuff I need to sell has decent 3rd party sales forums anyway.

I don't think ebay can sustain these charges they are totally extortionate for a market leader.

Thing is eBay has moved from the average person selling things to businesses. Take a look for almost anything and most of it is new with far less second hand items these days. It has definitely become business orientated

How much of that is a response to covid necessity though? If you're a small shop with no online store of your own you look at whatever platform can help you for the lowest fee I guess?

I never sell on ebay due to not agreeing to paypal T&Cs or rather ebay's demand to be able to charge against my paypal should they decide they want to. But giving ebay my bank details? Not going to happen. End of. Paypal I was coming round to, but they want my account? Err no. I'll just keep donating to charity shops.

Re: eBay Sellers fees are now.... painful

Vs PayPal the fees are slightly (like 0.1%) lower, they didn't need to match PayPal's fees but of course they just want to keep the extra (especially with the cash transactions)
The delays are painful, they don't release the funds for a few days then it takes another couple to appear in your account. With PayPal you could have it in your account same day.

I don't sell much on there but they're making it more and more hostile to be a casual seller.

Look out for the very frequent offers of reduced fees to list or sell, I recently removed a listing and put it immediately back up and the final fee was halved.

    you've been warnedd
Ebay charged 10% before, and Paypal took ~ 2.9%

    Why does this sting more?

Besides the limited fee weekends mean greater savings - the last two haven't been £1 fvf weekends but they were great. The last one was £3 fvf, and I sold about £1k on there across two listings. £6 in fees!!

Even on £1 fvf offers, paypal still used to take their 2.9% under the old system. As far as I can tell, ebay have just swapped out the middle man and employed Adyen on (presumably) a much more profitable basis.
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes; after that, who cares?! He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

I haven't sold on eBay for a long time, because they suck and it was risky, this doesn't change that..

I'll use it for buying but selling I'd rather not..

Re: eBay Sellers fees are now.... painful

I checked my March statement (old system)

    I sold
£33 item (no postage no Paypal, cash on collection)
£54 item plus £4.20 postage and paid via paypal - £1.99 charge for that from paypal)

Total ebay cost £5.82 plus paypal £1.99

    5.82 + 1.99 = 7.81 / 91.20 x100 = 8.5%

thats what I have been paying for years. About 8 %

    not 13%

That's due to cash, ebay now take their 12.8% on cash too which of course never happened with Paypal. This change really will net them a good chunk of additional cash, poor company is clearly struggling :/

They're not struggling at all. They had a massive boom in usage during lockdown. If anything they're riding a wave at the moment. This must be more attributable to greed.

This is easily the worst part of these new fees, 12.8% on cash on collection, absolute madness. My folks have had a lot of success selling stuff on Facebook Marketplace, hopefully we will see more competition arise from this.

Just in case this affects anyone, the gov plans to crack down on people they think are trading in some form (beyond occasional domestic flogging) https://inews.co.uk/news/coronavirus...traders-430207
