Ordering direct from Crucial - proceed with extreme caution...

I am slowly building up the bits I need for my new build, and based on some very well received advice I had been trawling for 2x16GB of Crucial 3600 Ballistix - and it’s a little hard to find. Eventually I did find it, showing in stock, on Crucial’s site, at a OK price of £170 inc shipping. Ordered Saturday just gone, delivery estimate 3-5 days.
Got an email on the Sunday to say that they had made a mistake and it was actually out of stock But hey, I don’t need it like tomorrow so no problem. Got another email on Tuesday to say it had shipped
Have been clicking on the tracker via UPS (should have set off my alarm bells really that UPS were involved, but it didn’t) and kept telling me to try back soon.
Clicked this morning to see that it was being delivered today - I was pleased - right up until I saw the link that said - Fees to pay ........ Clicked on it ....... £41.99 owed

Well I was a little cross to say the least. I ordered from Crucial.UK and I paid an amount including VAT, no mention of any charges, or the fact that it was coming from CZ ......

Got straight onto online chat and ended up spending 20 minutes chatting to a very helpful assistant. Only issue is that they didn’t have a clue or certainly didn’t act as though they had a clue as to what was the problem. But fortunately they did have a very good idea of how much distress this must be casing me and were able to completely understand and relate to my feelings and anguish - what empathy, especially from several thousand miles and from only a few typed words, incredible !

The long and short of it is that I rejected the delivery, there is no way I am paying £41.99 extra for something that is hardly urgent, and most importantly I refuse to pay something that was in no way made clear or explained. Now I have to wait up to 17 working days to get my money back - joy..

Re: Ordering direct from Crucial - proceed with extreme caution...

I had problems with an order direct from Crucial about 8 months ago. I ordered some RAM which took over a month to arrive from the Netherlands. I could have ordered from Amazon and had it in just few days instead, but it was ever so slightly cheaper direct from the Crucial website. I didn't have any extra charges to pay (it was pre-Brexit), but I was upset that there Crucial didn't mention the extended delivery times at the time I made the order. If you look at Crucial's Trustpilot page, 36% of their ratings are bad...I wish I'd seen that before ordering.

I didn’t even consider trust piloting a first party manufacturer/supplier like Crucial. Shows you can’t take anything for granted .......

Very strange, although I seldom bought Crucial stuff direct from Crucial I did used to like buying Crucial stuff as the RMA centre was in Glasgow.

Not that their stuff is that reliable but Glasgow beats the hassle of RMA'ing outside the country. And this way before Brexit, would be way worse now.

Guess they have changed that now, too?

I am thinking that this is another Brexit ‘enhancement’

My issue is not with the charge, it’s the fact that there was no mention (at least nothing obvious) of the potential import duty..

Re: Ordering direct from Crucial - proceed with extreme caution...

I've fond that several courier companies (DHL in particular) have started charging their own excesses on shipments to the UK from certain countries, Germany being a notable one.
It might be nothing to do with Crucial and purely something UPS are stiffing you over... or it could just be that someone double-charged the shipping by accident. Mistakes do happen... Each individual overseas retailer is required to register for and charge UK VAT at the point of sale, but some still don't bother and so shipping companies often charge roughly the same amount to help expedite shipments rather than having to sit on them while third parties sort themselves out.

I had ordered direct from the Crucial website in the past & had received really good service, the items were usually delivered in about 3-5 days, if I remember correctly. So I was a bit surprised about how badly they let me down on my last order. It won't put me off buying Crucial products again in the future, but I won't be ordering direct from their website ever again.

A mate managed to get an MX500 1TB for £65 because Crucial got confused, and deducted the VAT,etc after Brexit happened and didn't apply it back on. Also as the item was under £135 there was no additional duties to be added.

If that is the case then it’s a total liberty by UPS - I wanted that RAM and it was only 6 inches from my hand. But purely out of principal, there was no way I was coughing up an extra 42 quid !

"However, even with this deal in place, businesses and carriers will now face more paperwork and administration when shipping, meaning increased costs and adjustments to supply chains"
    https://solutions.ups.com/gb-brexit.html

    DHL have done similar things.
"From 1 January 2021, a fee will be levied on all dutiable shipments between the UK and European Union countries, both inbound and outbound. With the information that is currently available, the intention is that this fee will be set at £0.25 per kg with a minimum charged amount of £4.50 per shipment. This fee may be adjusted, should circumstances change significantly"
    https://dhlguide.co.uk/wp-content/up...tober_2020.pdf

I imagine other carriers will be doing the same.

I imagine other carriers will be doing the same.
I understand costs and constraints - but the purchaser needs to be made aware this ‘may’ happen.
If for that had been mentioned I could have made an informed decision which would have been simply not to have ordered from them.

    Exactly.

If you had bought from a .DE, .FR, .CZ etc then, well, fair enough. But it's somewhat devious (though probably legal) to run a .UK website where the T&Cs actually state the transaction is in the jurisdiction of a non-UK country, without being overtly clear about it.

Personally, I'm a bit anal about who/where I buy from and I do read the T&Cs. I only deal with companies that either are UK based or that (so far) have a good enough reputation for customer service that I'm willing to chance it even if they aren't. Case in point - Amazon.

But it's certainly sharp practice if the are basing transactions at Crucial UK outside of the UK and is enough to ensure I'll just buy elsewhere if I find that if/when I next buy from them. That would ensure that No_of_Customers = No_of_Customers - 1 because if they are pulling that, then I can't trust them and if I can't trust them, I won't buy from them.

Browsing site is https://uk.crucial.com/ which a nice UK flag at the top. But when you click through to the cart you end up on the generic https://shop.crucial.com/ with a small note at the bottom saying:
Digital River Ireland Ltd. is the authorised reseller and merchant of the products and services offered within this store.
    Naughty and subtle redirect.

VAT is included however which should mean there's nothing else to pay so naughty UPS - not really sure what they were charging for!

Naughty is NOT the description I had in mind when I got the email with the charge info attached. It really did make my blood boil a little. Added to that, I have had an unaccounted for Paypal transaction appear in my bank account, same day for almost the same amount of money (90 pence different) The odd thing is that it does not show in my paypal transactions. A little googling has led me to understand that these charges appear bank first and then paypal 2-3 days later, so we will see..
I can't see how they are related, or how UPS would be able to use my Paypal account to withdraw money, but all the same, I don't like the coincidence.
