Distillery sold and relocated to China

Well this is a strange one. What do people think on this? Is it wise? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotla...iness-57825081

Is it another case of giving away the keys to the kingdom so to speak?

So you lead the world with a desirable premium product, that is one of the few valid exports Scotland has these days. So why do you voluntarily sell to your biggest market not just the design but entire fabrication of a working distillery - and the art of making and shaping those stills is half the battle. Ok location and aging and barrelling all matter, but is this wise? Is this the business equivalent of giving the Russians the RR Nain engine back in the 40s? I believe the prophet Gandalf would say "keep it secret, keep it safe..." Or am I just too pessimistic?

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

I was under the impression the equipment is brand new and purpose built to be shipped out. Its not like they are taking a working distillery or have I got it wrong?

I can't see the issue either, it can't be called Scottish whiskey so will just be whiskey I guess, bit like any other country making whiskey

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

It's ambiguous but my comment was on the sense of making it for them in the first place. I guess if you own a stake in the enterprise in China it could make business sense, but it sounded to me like this was not the case, that it was owned by a venture capital firm out of HK?

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

I assume like all alcoholic drinks, the water used is a part of the flavour. So unless they start shipping tankers of Scottish water to China, which won't be fresh by the time they get there, they are making a slightly different drink?

You can't make a 10yr old malt in a month, so I guess it will be a while before we find out how this pans out.

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

Scottish whiskey needs to be aged for a minimum of 3 years but as it won't be in Scotland nor be able to be called Scottish I wonder if they will just adjust the bottling times

    Even if it could:

1/. It would be Scotch whisky, Scotch, or just whisky.
2/. It would be whisky, not whiskey. The latter is for Irish and American people. The rest of us can spell.

Thanks for correcting my atrocious spelling

Could I get away with it by saying my language is set to English(US)?

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

The French and Italians seem to have survived the new world and antipodes working out how to make wine. The vessels and method are one thing, but as others have said so much more comes from the ingredients (water and grain,) temperatures, humidity etc.

In time I have no doubt they can make good whisky in China, but it'll have its own regional flavours and won't be the same as scotch in just the same way that Japanese whisky (for example,) isn't.

Actually, I think that would be a valid excuse... but of course now you's know, you's'll be expected to set it to UK-ish English and talk propper, innit!!

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

I have pulled many a person up on their spelling over the years so it's about time it happened to me

But I really do have it set to English(US), never changed it from the default when I got the mac, must set it to the correct language!

We basically own nothing anymore not even our Gas, Lights and water. These politicians won't be happy till it's all gone.

Re: Distillery sold and relocated to China

That's a bit of a leap. In this case we haven't sold critical national infrastructure, we haven't even sold the company that makes it.

A company that sells distillery equipment has sold some distillery equipment to a Chinese company.

    That's it, that's the story.

India is one of the biggest consumers and producers of Whiskey! Not surprised China is trying to get in on the act,as Spirits are quite popular over there too. Also isn't Whiskey,Whisky but produced outside Scotland??

Agreed on that. But is it short term profit for long term decline? that's what I'm asking.
